Question

DSL over internet connection sharing

Asked by: MikeF09

I just switched to SBC Global DSL, which i was planning on sharing accross my 2 computer home network, using the windows XP ICS, however its the oddest thing the Internet service on the host computer works perfectly, but on the client computer everything works fine except that there are certain webpages that I can not view...such as www.ebay.com.... www.real.com....those are just 2 examples of the many pages that i cannot view. there are many pages that I can view just fine. Email programs work fine along with programs like Aim and Kazaa.... everything works fine but when i try to go to certain particular web pages, IE SHOWS that its doing something by the little widnow in the upper right corner of the screen, it says 'opening page' on the status bar and it will stay like that for hours if i leave it. Anyone wiht any knowledge please help. thanks

You may want to try to disable Microsoft's firewall on both pc's(if it is enabled)(It is located under the properties for the connection under the advanced tab) and install zone alarm in its place if you want a firewall.
http://www.zonelabs.com

If that does not work you can try deleting your connections and readding them on both pc's.  Reenable ICS on the one connected to SBC DSL.  And verify that your other computer is getting its IP address through DHCP.

Thats quite a strange problem actually.  I have kinda the same setup here except my internet connection is a dialup and I am using wireless adapters between my two pc's.  I was having connectivity issues with my wireless so I had to reduce the rate from 11mbps to 5.5mbps and I havent had the problem since.

Try those couple things and lemme know how it works out.

Do yourself a favor and get a router.  I believe SBC Global uses PPPoE 'dialup DSL' with the EnterNet software to kick it off.  This software is a known pain in the a##. With the router, you configure the router to initiate the connection and leave it open full time and you can then strip out the EnterNet alltogether.  Much easier to use this way, and the router provides firewall protection. ICS is tricky to setup and tweak and should be used only as a last resort.

As the sites you mention seem to be secure web pages, take a look at Internet Explorer Settings..

Go to Internet Options> Connections> Lan Settings..." if there is a manual proxy or auto configuration script used here, is it the correct one for your ISP? If not then try to find out what it should be!

Also try unticking everything in Lan Settings, as you are on a LAN connection, I think it will probably be best (don't remove the addresses in the settings; as if this fix fails, you can tick them again without causing problems!)

And/Or

"Internet Options> Advanced" and click the "Restore Defaults" Button Then go to "Privacy" tab and click "Advanced" then click "Overide Cookie Handling" then allow First Party Cookies and enable "always allow session cookies" then Block "Third Party Cookies"

If you use IE 6 try the following...

Internet Options> "Advanced" untick the option "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions"

Good Luck

I just found out what the problem is...There is a known bug in ICS within XP when using PPPoE which you are...you must upgrade the host computer running ICS to ServicePack 1a to fix it.  I was having the problem myself until i found this microsoft knowledgebase article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319661

Here is the link on microsofts site to just download SP1a:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp

That should take care of your problem :P

So basically install ServicePack 1a and reboot and problem will go away!
