Question

strange DSL problem....

Asked by: funkytaz10

Hi,

I finally got an xDSL connection here in Ukraine and with
this do I have a strange problem that probably has
something to do with the XP operating system  (according
the dsl companies technician, he claims it NEVER happens with a w98SE computer, but yeah what you want everybody in UKraine LOVES w98 se and doesn't know what XP PRO is, LOL)

the xdsl is based on the isdl technology (what i
understood does it has something to do with ISDN) and has
one disadvantage, when somebody calls with the telephone
line on which the xdsl is connected than we have a little
dropping of the speed, which is "normal" according the
technician...

Ok I can live with that but THE PROBLEM is that i can't browse
any website on the whole internet when somebody is calling.
The strange thing is that when i have Kazaa lite on, he just continues
downloading music like nothing is wrong even when somebody is calling as if kaza lite has a special port or so that stays unaffected???

what can be the cause of this??
Can i configue my webbrowsing to use this "kazaa lite port" (if i will ever find which port this thing is using)???
browsing the web for the business is more important than downloading music on unused bandwidth!!

in the network connections panel is this dsl connection under "direct" connections and when i try to use the network wizard to share the dsl connection that the dsl modem is not between the choices for which modem I use to connect to the internet?? so i configured ics manually (properties advanced and so on)
OF course is the idsl modem Ukrainian  (SIRIUS-128) and he connects trough a COM PORT !!! which reduces his maximum speed to 115.500 b/sec, but OK it is better than 40.000 b/s which is the maximum with dial up in UKraine because of the BAD condition of the telephone cables...
AND OF COURSE NO SIGNED DRIVERS FOR XP, i asked the factory if they have them, but NO answer for the moment(guess they are translating my English demand for it, lol, funny to be a stranger living in Ukraine...)

i also downloaded the ICS configuration utility to map
certain ports , but when i start this program it says that
ICS is not configured in the registery of my system??? but i am using it
more than 2 years now without any problems...

can i uninstall ICS on XP and install it again, so that it would show in the registery or is this ICS configuration utility only for older versions of windows...??

thanks for any help

Peter

You will only need drivers if the modem is internal or connected through your serial port. It sounds like it is connected through your ethernet, this is why it doesn't show up as an option in the network wizard. To share the connection (if it is ethernet) is to right click the dsl connection and go to the advanced tab and click the share connection tab; I am assuming that you have another ethernet card connected to your network -- otherwise it will not work. As for the other problems, I would call your ISP to have your lines checked or the modem replaced. The ICS utility may not be XP compatible, you will have to check where you got it from and check the compatability list.

HI,

The dsl modem is an external modem, who connects to the computer trough a com port (RS232, if i am not mistaken)
the dsl is shared without any problems and everything works except the strange behaviour of when the line is used by telephone the webbrowsing wont work (even not on the host computer) but Kazaa lite just continues to download like nothing happened??
if i put Kazaa lite off and hope than that webbrowsing would work, than i get dissapointed because it won't work....:-((

so for me it has something to do with the portmapping of ICS??

thanks for the advice anyway

looking at the speed of the connection this looks more like isdn not dsl this would explain the drop in speed when the phone rings. isdn home relys on two b channels which can be combined to give the 115 k unfortunately when someone rings one channel is required to service the call and the speed will reduce. as for the port issue as far as i know all browsing takes place on port 80.
