The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Accessing ADSL connection from remote computer

Asked by ChristopherWAKnight in DSL Lines / Cable Internet

I have an ADSL connection to a mixed LAN at my office. There are 3 Imacs with one acting as a server and a PC running Windows 2000, all connected by ethernet and with a Netgear Router and an Alcatel Speed Touch Home Modem. The iMacs have Modem connections on the same line as the ADSL connection and they can access the net via their own modems, however, this is not necessary because of the ADSL connection, I have used these modem connections and it is fairly slow when the ADSL is running. I could set up a dedicated line for one of these computers, however.
This all works very well with all computers able to access the Internet. I was so impressed with this set up I bought the gear for a similar setup at home, except that I was attemting a wireless connection between an iBook and a PC downstairs. I have a D-link 300 Modem and a Belkin wireless Router connected to the iBook and a wireless access on the PC. I had checked with Telstra that ADSL was available from the telephone at home and they said it was, owever, when it came for them to establish the connection it was not possible, because the exchange was more than 3.5 Km away.
Is it possible to set up a link between one of the computers at home and the ADSL at the office. Ideally so that the router functioned and both the computers at home could access the internet simultaneously.
There are two lines at home, one of which is used exclusively for the net, via a dialup ISP. This is apparently a "virtual" double line in, so that the speed is halved when accessing the net.
I guess what I want most is simultaneous access to the net on both computers (iBook and PC)at home with some more speed, but would sacrifice speed for the simultaneous access, even if I had to continue with the dialup ISP.
I have thought about a VPN and also PCanywhere, any suggestions?
