Question

SMTP Issue with Road Runner Broadband Service

Asked by: dripa

Does anyone know a way around the blocks that road runner has on using a different SMTP server. I trying to use my company's SMTP to send out mail but roadrunner is blocking me from doing that. Is this a port issue that they can block?

That is normal behaviour for an ISP. I don't think you'll be successfull changing their ideas.

It is not a port issue since the SMTP server you are trying to reach is not on the network you are on. This would be true on your company network also, you probably won't be able to use the RR SMTP servers. If you are trying to make it look like you are emailing from work, change your info in your email client; especially the reply to. Some email programs let you 'spoof' your sending server address also. You can setup an account with your company email info entered into it, but use your RR account as your "default" account, this way you can get your email from your company and still reply to it through RR. Hope this helps!

This most likely is a port problem.  They will not allow you make any outbound connections to port 25.  If this is the case, there is nothing you can do without the support of your company or your ISP.

Before I go on, I should mention that SMTP blocking the only ISP enforced service restriction that I generally support.  ISP's block SMTP to prevent SPAM.  They probably run an SMTP with very careful relay checking, and they do not want anybody to use their network for SPAM, and you probably don't either.  Even if every piece of mail you send will end up on your company's server, there is very little disadvantage to relaying messages through your ISP's server.

People often cite security as a reason to send mail directly to a specific SMTP server, bypassing the local ISP, but there is no security advantage to doing so. Your message will cross the same networks either way.  If security is your concern, the only option you have is to encrypt your email.

If you have a valid reason to send mail directly to your company, and your ISP agrees that the need is valid, they will unblock the port for you.  This would be the easiest solution., and a phone call couldn't hurt.

If your company runs a VPN, you could tunnel messages to their email server that way.

If you have the ear of your network administrator at work, you may be able to persuade him to configure the mail server to run on a nonstandard port, but this would likely take more work than it's worth.

As I said before, for the vast majority of internet users, the correct way to do things is to relay mail via the local ISP.  If you think you are the exception, and the other solutions posted by myself and others will not work, let us know why and I'm sure something can be worked out.

Good Luck

Just set your outbound SMTP server for your company email account to Road Runners SMTP.  It doesnt matter what SMTP server delivers your outbound mail,  unless you have content scanning, etc. that you want to subscribe to.  Otherwise your reply address is determined by the MAIL FROM: variable passed to the SMTP server.  This will be your work address isf you have configured your accounts properly.

llyquid is right - user road runners smtp server - this is a totaly normal problem - smtp servers often dont authenticate - right? - - wrong - they authenticate based on the network you are on - not on email address -=

On June 3, 2002, Road Runner Business Class implemented SMTP Authentication on the outbound e-mail servers. SMTP Authentication ensures that only authorized users are utilizing the Business Class SMTP e-mail servers.

SMTP Authentication Client Configuration Instructions

1. Start Outlook. Click the "Tools" menu option. Next, select "Services" from the pull-down menu.
2. From the listing, select your commercial mail account. Click the "Properties" button.
OR
(2. Select "Accounts" from the pull-down menu. 3. Click on "Properties." 4. Select the "Servers" tab. 5. Place a check mark in the box next to "My server requires authentication" and click the "OK" button.)

3. Select the "Servers" tab.
4. Place a check mark in the box next to "My server requires authentication and click the "OK" button.

Another solution is to use your work mail server settings for incoming mail server as you normally would and set the outbound SMTP port 25 to smtp-server.nc.rr.com( you will probably need to change the NC to your location this was from North Carolina).  The overall effect is transparent.  I use this all of the time using my various pop accounts from work.  I simply change the SMTP server to the SMTP server address my company uses and all looks normal.  Since I am on a cable modem, many of the same settings apply when I am at home as well but I have to change the outbound server to match that of the provider I am connected to at the time I send it.  I know this was mentioned before but as testimony, IT WORKS!

I am not sure if you are on business class or not, however from what IO have found the same is applicable to residential accounts as well, as they are often used by spammers who work from home.

Cause/Description: The reason for this error is because many ISP's (Internet Service Providers) are blocking "Port 25" which is the port used to send email. They do this as a security precaution to protect against "spam" (unsolicited email). More and more ISP's are doing this everyday (none of us like spam!). Here are just a few of the major ISP's that block Port 25: Earthlink/Mindspring, AT&T, MSN, Verizon, Bellsouth, Roadrunner, and most cable and DSL companies.

Solution: The way around this is to set your SMTP settings to those of your ISP's. For example: "mail.cox.com" rather than "mail.yourdomain.com". After doing that, you will be sending mail though your ISP's servers rather than ours. Keep in mind that nothing else changes in the way your mail is delivered. Your "from" address and your "reply to" address will remain the same.

You will need to contact your ISP and ask for the "SMTP or out-going mail server address", to find out exactly what to replace mail.yourdomain.com with.

Hopefully there is enough information to help you here.  I am guessing that you are getting the mail relaying service denial?
