Question

Setting up home network (long one)

Asked by: howmanycookies

I have Earthlink Cable internet. We have it set up where it goes into his computer, then I share the connection across a hubbed ethernet connection. i want to set it up so that the modem goes into the hub then into our computers. When I put the modem into the uplink port of the hub, and connect our computers, my computer does just fine. His computer cannot get an ip. We use WINXP PRO and when I try to repair the IP address it says it can't renew the IP. Any ideas? I am rather certain the drivers on our Realtek ethernet cards are up to date. The hub is some basic job with no name on it.

It sounds like Earthlink only provides one (1) IP address.  The other computer got logged on because it booted up first, and locked its network MAC address in the cable modem, and in turn got a dynamic address from Earthlink.  Disconnect his computer, then reboot the cable modem, then plug yours in and boot up...

To solve this (assuming Earthlink doesn't care) you can get a NAT router/firewall, etc...  get one IP address to use externally facing, and it will divvy up private addresses internally.

Good luck!

The other option if this is a cable modem is to purchase an additional IP.  Usual cost 5.00 a month.  A router is a one time purchase (unless you add wireless, like I did recently)If you are trying to share you need two NICs in the computer which will share the connection out to the other computers on the hub.

btw if you use ICS you will remove the hub from its current locatuion and hook it into the NIC that is set to share the connection.  If yu need more help to share  a conection via ICS, look here:  http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/

Yes, ICS could work, but that adds to the management and overhead, and expects that the XP box is always on to route the connection...

Here's what I see:

- your cable connects to the input on the cable modem
- the cable modem network port connects to your (newly purchased) router*
- the other port(s) on the router connect to your hub
- your computers connect to the hub (as you already have)

* Minimally this router will need to provide NAT (natural address translation)
* it could include DHCP, wireless and/or firewalling, etc

i would buy cable/DSL router ( netgear) for $50-70 with 4 port switch build in it, runs DHCP, NAT etc for you and saves eadeche. you can still add your hub to network for more pcs

zoranss agrees with me, and I agree with pbessman about the savings if you have 2 NIC's on XP :-)  Guess it just comes down to $ and ¢...
