Question

networking 2 computers to 1 modem with no other hardware

Asked by: cablegirl

I have a friend attempting to connect 1 modem with only 1 IP to two different computers on a pier to pier network and insists that he has done it before but forgot how.  Any ideas how to do it?

I have done it...enable connection sharing, (you will need a HUB), connect the shared resource computer to the HUB (uplink port) and connect the other PC's to the HUB on the empty ports.

Oh.. I forgot to mention,  On the shared resoures computer, be sure you allow sharing of that NIC with the hub.. so the hub can repeat what it "sees" from the uplink port on the HUB.  On the client comptuer(s), set the networking up, so that you are connecting through a shared gateway.

by all means, go get a dsl/cable router/firewall for this (personal favorite is linksys befsr41 -- and no, i don't work for linksys).

your method will certainly work, but i'm not a big fan of microsoft PC's with unprotected broadband connections to the net.

the linksys is extremely easy to set up, and they're getting cheaper all the time.

good luck.

As long as one of the PCs has two ethernet cards installed (one for plugging into the modem and the other plugged into the other computer) all you have to do is to select the ethernet card that is connected to the modem and (depending on what version of Windows you are using will vary how you implement this) enable the connection to share the Internet connection (ICS). This way both computers can be on the Internet at the same time with one IP address. A hub is not required. I would suggest a good firewall and virus scanner for the computers. If you let me know what version of Windows you are using I can give you more detailed directions for setting up Windows.

My advise is that instead of getting a hub,get a router, money well spent because not only you get to use more than one pc but it has NAT so it acts as an excellent firewall especially when you are on "always on" broadband.

good luck
