Question

Cant connect to video games using Direct IP access using a linksys wireless router...

Asked by: snowdog8029

Experts,

This is my first question so all i have is 130 points and i its all yours if you can help me out.

I recently bought a Linksys wireless-b broadband router model befw11s4. I also bought a 2nd computer the same day. Now both computers are hooked up and working. I can get on the net with both computers and download with both and connect to other game site like battle.net.

Now here is my Problem, My friend and I like to play games such as ghost recon, age of mythology. We usually play by way of direct ip connection and I usually connect to his computer cause he has a static IP address and my ISP makes me have a dynamic IP address.

Ever since I bought my wireless system I can not connect to any games using direct IP connections. I have contacted linksys a few times on this and its like they are reading from a book in front of them cause they all use the same solutions and none of them work.

Now when I disconnect the my computer from router and connect it directly to the cable modem everthing works just fine, but it doesnt solve my problem.

Just incase, My system specs are......

(Computer #1) Windows XP, 768 MB of ram, 1.8 GHZ intel, Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network, Nividia geforce 4 128MB TI4200.

(Computer #2) Windows XP, 512 MB of ram, 2.6 GHZ intel, Linksys Wireless-b ethernet card, Nividia geforce 4 MX 440 64MB

Well thats my problem hope some one can help. By the way all my drivers and firmware are up to date.

Hi Snowdog,

The Linksys router has built in NAT/Firewall. NAT standds for Network Address Translation and it can translate the Real Public IP address to your Private IP on your network behind the router. It may require PORT FORWARDING for the ports that each individual game uses internally for you to connect using direct IP.

With the router in place, your IP address is now on your private network ( not public, like the Internet). When connecting via Direct IP, the Host on the other end can only see the PUBLIC IP that is assigned to the router.

There may be a solution to OPEN up the ports necessary for each game within the routers Firewall configuration. You can typically configure your router via browsing to http://192.168.0.1 for example. Check your router manual for specific IP etc.

Also, you will need the Ports to be forwarded and the type. I.e. Port 6777, UDP or TCP for the game that you want to play as each of them may use different ports.

When you plug in directly to your modem, then you have all ports open using your Public Internet Ip and thats why it works flawlessly. Linksys should be able to help with the Port Forwarding but you will need the game port info and have those ports forwarded to your IP ( 192.168.x.x for example ).

Good Luck,

Hammer

If the port forwarding fails to work you can also put your computer in the "DMZ" when you want to play the games and remove it when you don't. The way to do this (the manual will tell you exactly) is to put the ip address the router is giving the computer you want to play games on into the DMZ. I have had to use both techniques with my old linksys router, depending on what game I was playing (mostly had to leave the wife on the DMZ because of all the different stuff she was running and using port forwarding for my stuff, then configuring the firewalls, etc.). I recently got a belkin "4 port gateway router" that required absolutely no configuration on my part for any of my games or programs to work, it was preconfigured for the popular apps -- I was greatly impressed. Hope this helps!! ;)
