Question

Using DSL Cable Modem with Linksys Wireless Wrt54G router to share internet connection and files for a 2000 desktop and XPHome Edition Laptop

Asked by: mainesmith

I am able to share the internet connection but my laptop seems to keep dropping the network.  I have changed the frequency from the default 6 to 1 and i still have the same problem although the signal says it is good.  Also, I am unable to see/share files for these computers as i have them in a workgroup.  any suggestions on the dropped network and the file and print sharing among these two computers?

Possibly power saving?  Go into your Device Manager on the laptop and disable Power saving on the wireless card.

on your 2000 desktop... in the share add the guest account to the share permissions.. or create an account with the same user name as on the laptop.....

you can also try enabling Netbios on both machines
go to your network properties and install protocol then microsoft then netbios ( on win2k ) and
nw link ipx/spx netbios compatable protocol ( win xp home )
and see if that get's it going for you..

  Good Luck

well i just enabled tcp/ip over netbios on the xp machine and now i can see the laptop on the 2000 computer, but i can not see the 2000 computer on the xp home laptop.
any suggestions, because i really need the laptop to be able to see the printer and use it since it is hooked to the 2000 computer.

also any other suggestions on my network dropping even when i get messages stating that i have excellent to very good signals?

i added the nw ipx/sx protocol on the laptop and rebooted..still no luck.  on the laptop it says shareddocs and has the laptop stuff right there but when you choose view workgroup it says the workgroup name but does not list either the itself(the xp laptop) or the 2000 desktop.  this is completely confusing as to why this is not working..this is definitely an xp thing.

oh  yeah i added user names on the 2000 machine..identical to the usernames on the laptop...when i chose to On the laptop when Start-run-\\laptop i am taken to the shared resources laptop is the computer name of my laptop.  On the laptop when i start-run \\smith1 i get a log in boxi typed in the username i created on the 2000 desktop machine called smith 1 and i get the following message:

\\smith1 is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network source.  Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission.  The network name cannot be found.

again i have a workgroup called thesmiths and the laptop name is laptop and it has xp home.  i have a desktop which is called smith1 and it has windows 2000 on it.  the connection is through a cable modem/linksys wireless router.  the laptop has a dell true mobile wireless card in it.  i have added the ipx/sx protocols and i have enabled tcp/ip on both...

thanks for any help

1. You do not need nw ipx/spx or nwlink - it's for Novell Netware.
2. For the laptop you may want to apply the MS wireless rollup fixes:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826942&Product=winxp
3. They should be in the same workgroup name - not necessary, though
4. Try to ping one machine to another see if the network is working.
5. Do IPCONFIG /ALL and make sure they all have the same default gateway,
subnet mask and same subnet IP address.
6. Make sure all XP built-in firewall or firewall have port 135-139 open for the local area subnetwork.  138-139 are required for file/printer sharing.

cheers

ok.  i did not load the rollup fix, but i did take off the 802.x authenication and that fixed the problem of my wireless dropping

i did check the gateway they are both the same.  could we start over and make sure that i did everything write

also for the xp firewall i do not have that selected.  but if i did i do not know how to open the 135-139 ports.

i do have a firewall on my xp (zone alarm) but i shut it down to test and i still get nothing.

i really feel that i am missing some setting on the xp machine or if i have to set some user or account info i have done something wrong there

i did ipconfig /all and they both have the same info except the node name on the laptop is hybrid and the desk top is hybrid

it makes no sense to me that i can see the shared files on my 2000 desktop but i can not on my xp machine.  are there any other commands that i can use at a prompt that would give some info. primary dns has no value for either mahcine....what can i put in the prompt so that it shows the workgroup name?

thanks much

OK, let's start with XP sharing basic - with the following to see if it would solve your problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304040&Product=winxp

cheers

You said your connection shows "good".  I have had similar issues with an "Excellent" connection.  One way I have been able to overcome these issues is by using XP Pros remote desktop option.  I know you are using XP Home.  I only mention it to help shed light on the issue.

By the way Dell just sent me an update for the card you are using.  This is one of the best cards out on the market for the 802.11b class.  You may want to try the updated file available here:  http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Format.aspx?ReleaseID=R46346&sws=fw .
I am not sure whyt they are sending it to me now but It was just sent to me on Wednesday of this week and it is over a year old.

From the email they sent me, "Criticality: Optional. Dell recommends the customer review specifics about the update to determine if it applies to your system. The update contains changes that impact only certain configurations, or provides new features that may/may not apply to your environment.
