Actiontec wireless GT701-WG and Sonicwall firewall issues
I'm setting up a small network and I'm having some problems getting the Actiontec wireless GT701-WG modem gateway and Sonicwall TZ 170 to work together.
I'm running a windows 2003 server running DHCP and DNS services. The DSL modem is a little different than the typical modem. It's also a wireless gateway, runs NAT, and a firewall. I disabled DHCP on it and ran it through a switch. Set my network so that the modem gateway was my network default gateway(192.168.0.1) and things run well. My LAN can access the internet.
To set it up to work through the firewall I made the physical connections and gave the modem/ gateway a different IP addess (192.168.0.5). I diabled NAT and set the firewall setting to low (I don't think this can be disabled). I ran the network wizard on the firewall. This included setting it up to receive a dynamic IP address from the ISP via PPPoe (User name and password).
The firewall works (I could ping it) but I get no activity from the internet on my network. On the firewall settings I see I'm not getting an IP from the WAN. I checked the user name and password and everything seems to correct.
I also tried setting the modem/ gateway for DMZ forwarding to my firewall (192.168.0.1). Still didn't work.
Any suggestions would help. Thanks in advance!

I switched the modem/ gateway over to transparent bridging and it worked. Thanks a lot for your help! One thing I noticed, and this could be due to any number of things, the connection seemed really slow after the DSL was connected through the firewall. Any idea what this could be?

You are absolutely correct in that any number of things could cause your speed issues.
First, I would run a series of pings against both ips and names to determine if your speed issues are related to name resolution. If that's the case, check your DNS and perhaps contact your ISP to determine if they have any closer dns servers than the one you are using.
Sadly, I was unable to download the actual manual for the Sonicwall device, but it should have some logging functionality. Check your logs to see if you have a bunch of packets being dropped. To some extent, you can use the "Netstat" command in windows to do this if you know what you are looking for.
You might also check just how strong your firewall is guarding your traffic. Obviously, if it's examining everything TOO closely it could hamper your network speed.
And also, just run an internet speed test like the one at http://reviews.cnet.com/Ba

I am doing a similar setup with a firewall behind the actiontec modem/router. I ran into a problem though-- my modem (using qwest as isp) uses PPPoA, but all the firewalls I've looked at (including the TZ-170) only support PPPoE not PPPoA. so my question is did you end up getting the TZ 170 to work with PPPoA? or what did you do to make it all work. I'd REALLY appreciate any feedback. Thanks!!

There is a feature of your Actiontec GT701-WG called "Transparent Bridging". This feature disables all the firewall and routing functionality of the Actiontec device and basically makes it preform more like a regular DSL modem. You can enable this feature by webbing into the gateway and selecting Advanced setup, Wan IP address and selecting "Transparent bridging" rather than "Obtain IP adress thorugh PPPoE".
You will then want to configure your Sonicwall device to use PPPoE as this becomes your main router in this scenario.
