I checked.
PC4 is using PC1's 192.168.0.1 address for it's dns server.
However, I still tried entering the ISP's dns addresses on PC4, but no luck.
What is the DNS proxy issue you mentioned?

Browse All TopicsHi, this is a very strange experience I am encountering with Internet sharing but only on one of four computers.
My 4 computer (pc # 1, 2, 3, 4) network is setup using 2 internet cards in desktop PC # 1 doing Internet Sharing, dhcp, etc.
I am using cable Internet. I am using cat5 wired connections with an 8 port small hub to which all computers are connected. Internet Sharing has worked without problems since over 2 years.
Now all of a sudden, I am having this problem
A VERY STRANGE PROBLEM:
1) One of my other desktops PC # 4, that worked all along (WIN XP Pro, SP2) is now taking almost 4 mins to connect to MSN.COM site as well as many other sites. I can go to Google.com in split second access and google search will show results fast as well, however, when I click on the google results hyplinks, most links never work, while one odd one may work after approx 3 to 4 mins.
2) I can go to do my banking services website that uses https and login and do banking and all at very good speed. No problems there...very strange.
3) I can ping to other computers on the LAN and open folders on other computers and do file transfers, no problems.
I can even do remote access from PC#4 to PC# 1 with full control.
4) I cannot open up a pre-saved HTML of a web page saved on my hard drive. However, the same local HTML file will open up fine if I disconnect network cable from the hub.
5) I have looked at firewalls on both PC # 1 and PC # 4 and tried turning off both, but no improvement.
6) THIS IS AGAIN VERY STRANGE...
If I connect directly to the cable modem to PC # 4 , then VIOLA! everything works beautiful and fast with full speed connection as if there is no problem and all websites including MSN.COM work flawlessly. At this point my network card in system tray shows as "Connected at 100 mbps" otherwise it's at 10 when connected via the hub.
7) PC's # 2 and 3, both are laptops and work fine, connected to the same hub and running win xp pro as well.
8) I have tried using cable from other pc's and it does not seem to be a cable problem
9) The only few changes that were done at one point are:
A cisco VPN software was installed recently by my son to connect to his work vpn but it was uninstalled after he discovered he could not get it to work. I am not sure if that did some configurational changes or what.
10) I also cleaned PC # 4 with Ad Aware SE PRO and checked with mcafee for virus, etc - none.
Thanks

You have two networks here: the network between PC1 and the ISP and the ICS network between PC1,2,3, & 4. I'm assuming the ICS network is 192.168.0.n mask 255.255.255.0. Is the other network a public network IP provided by your ISP or is it a gatewayed private IP?
DNS proxy means PC 1 is acting as a "proxy" DNS server for PC 2, 3, 4. PC1 is not a DNS itself, but it is relaying (proxying) requests.
I'm also starting to think about bad switch ports (swap some cables and see if the problem moves or not) and funky MAC tables.....
You are right about that.
PC1 that has 2 nics is running two network in each. One for the ICS and the other talking to my ISP.
>>>Is the other network a public network IP provided by your ISP or is it a gatewayed private IP?
It is Rogers cable and therefore the answer should be public network IP, right?
And about DNS proxy, that's also true.
PC1 is simply relaying requests from pc2,3 and 4.
Like I said earlier, I had disconnected the cable from one of the laptops and connected it to pc4 but it still had the same behaviour. So it does not look like a cable related issue. And, moreover, remember I mentioned that when I go directly to the cable modem bypassing the hub then the same pc with the same cable works great with full speed.
I have even tried different ports on the hub.
So where do we go from here?
Thanks
Well, my next thought is the router (PC1) is screwing up. And since ICS was never a great solution, I'd check PC1 with a fine-tooth comb. Especially patches and such. My next idea is to replace the hub with a Wired 4 port router/switch (Linksys befsr41 or similar) and hook the ISP into the router. voila, end of issues, one hopes.
Hi,
PC1 is win xp pro as well and is running sp2 as well like pc4.
And I have checked and updated all MS patches. Windows update after checking it, says no more patches available, all up-to-date.
Are there any specific steps that you can suggest step by step that I can look into in regards to your comment of checking PC1 with a fine-tooth comb.
Thanks
Yeah. Rebuild the Winsock tables on both machines with :
http://www.softpedia.com/g
look for any weirdness in the host tables......
All win xp patches applied to both machines.....
still thinking....
Get rid of the hub, get a router/switch as mentioned above, or at least a switch. PC 1 will be more secure with a firewalled router. A hub sends the same information out all ports as soon as it is received, even on a network where only two computers are connected to a hub, collisions can occur. Get a switch at a minimum.

I'm thinking that perhaps PC 4 is getting a bad DNS response from PC 1. Try this to test: On PC 4, put in the DNS entries manually, using known DNS servers on your ISP. See what happens. Or it might be a DNS proxy issue. Does PC4 use PC1's address as the DNS server?
