Unable to get internet access

I have a problem which is preventing me from getting any form of access to the internet, ie no browsing, webmail, ftp, etc.

My setup is as follows: 2 machines on cat5 home network connected to router which is also connected to cable modem. I can use the network between the 2 machines and 1 of them connects to the internet with no problems. The other machine has a dual boot (XP and 98SE). With XP it is fine but on 98SE I cannot get any internet access.
I suspect this may have been a result of a cleaning up operation when some no longer required software was uninstalled. One of these was a web accelerator Venturi2.

I have tried disabling firewall
disabled antivirus
reinstalled Internet Explorer
removed and reinstalled ethernet adapter and TCP/IP protocol in network properties
checked all internet connection and network settings
I cannot access the router configuration page (192.168.0.1) but ping and tracert are OK
a ping to any web url results in unknown host and tracert gives unable to resolve target system name
ping and tracert to ip addresses seem to be ok.

Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated

Go to start, run, and type in winipcfg and press enter. Check which adapter it is on. If it is on PPP adapter, it will not work. Hit the drop down arrow and put it on your network card. It should be the only other one on the list. Select it and hit renew. Close that and see if that fixes your problem. Hope this helps.

Thanks for reply but PPP adapter is not shown, only the network card.
Will the computer pull an IP address? Start, run, command. At the prompt, type in ipconfig and press enter.
IP Address 192.168.0.163
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.1
I would say if he can do this:
> ping and tracert to ip addresses seem to be ok
it's a pretty safe bet he's getting an address.

Can you describe what you mean when you say you can't access the router configuration page but ping and tracert are ok?

Is IE generating an error message when you go to http://192.168.0.1?  WHat version of IE are you using?

Can you get to the same page from the XP box?

Have you ever used dial-up networking on the 98 box?
Router configuration is by entering address 192.168.0.1 in Internet Explorer but results in internet not available (or something similar), work offline or try again.

If I open DOS and send ping or tracert to 192.168.0.1 the results seem to be OK

Using IE6

Yes I can get to it from XP

I don't think I have used dial-up on 98. I did have it some time ago but am pretty sure that it was before the current setup.

This may seem off the wall or crazy, but after your information, I do have another idea, as I have seen this problem before. Use XP and download IE 6.o and put it on a CD or some storage device that 98 can see. Boot back to 98 and install the IE 6.0 update. Sometimes, this will "kick" it and the internet will start working. You can get the download from microsoft.
Already tried that, as i said in original posting I reinstalled IE.
Ok, just checking. 98 doesn't come with 6.0, so I was just making sure
That's OK, it was IE6 I installed
If the settings for windows XP and windows 98 are the same, check the internet connection settings (control panel). Make sure it is set to LAN, and also make sure no proxy server is selected (if your system doesn't need one).

You can also try releasing and renewing the IP.
Connection is set to LAN and no proxy server.
I have done Release all and Renew all from winipcfg and no change.
Ok, I have to ask, did anything change right before you started experiencing this issue? Were sites visited that my contain browser hijacks and what not? Have you run anti-spy ware  and virus tools to rule that out?
I didn't visit any sites where I might have picked up a browser hijack or anything else malicious and have run anti-spy ware and virus scan checks.

The only thing which I think might be connected is that I uninstalled some programs which had been on the machine for sometime and were unused, one of these was Venturi2 a web accelerator.
when you run TRACERT, lets say for instance to google, how far do you get? Do you at least show the first hop to the router, or do you get that far?
No, doesn't even get as far as the router.
Further to previous reply:

ping to www.google.co.uk results in unknown host
ping to 66.102.9.104 gives average reply 36ms

tracert to www.google.co.uk results in unable to resolve target system name
tracert to 66.102.9.104 reaches target in 13 hops
can you ping the loopback? 127.0.0.1???
Yes ping to 127.0.0.1 is ok, 0ms
bah, your killing me. One thing I used to do in the 98 days....

Boot into safe mode(without network), go into network properties, remove all installed protocols, just rip it down so that the only thing left will be the nic itself. It will yell at you saying that the network is incomplete. Say ok to that, move on to device manager and remove the nic. Reboot into 98 normal, and go about setting up the nic as normal, with client for M$ networks and tcp/ip. I am assuming this is a PnP nic. I have a feeling the routing table on the system is a bit sideways since you cannot even hit the router. I do believe this will rebuild everything as if you were starting over with that device.

Hope this helps, I am dusting off thoughts I have not used in a while! :)
Removed everything in network properties as well as nic. After reboot reinstalled it all but still the same!!!
ONe way to determine whether this is software or a winsock problem is to download and install Firefox...  You can put it on a cdrom and install it from another good working system...  If this browser can open a page, then you know it is IE that is the issue here..  (there is an IE fix utility if you wish to try that after this procedure..)

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Personally, I like Firefox, and use both IE and it for surfing specific sites..

I already have Firefox installed but did not consider trying it as problems are not limited to browsing. However I have just tested it with no more success.

I also like Firefox but find that some sites do not display so well so use both browsers.

Fantastic, followed the procedure and everything started working again. I had done numerous searches looking for help but hadn't come across this or anything like it.
Thanks for your help and to others who also offered their suggestions.
