The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

DCM425 Cable Modem (RCA/Thomson) & Linksys Wrt54G compatability

Ok,  so a little background.

I currently subscribe to cable modem service from my cable company at 1mb.  I had a Com21 cable modem hooked to a Linksys router that was assigned a static IP.  I have my own web server and was utilizing the router for port forwarding, etc.  Recently I upgraded to their faster service  at 3mb.  To do so I had to "upgrade" my cable modem.  So I traded in the Com21 and recieved an RCA (DCM425), plugged it in and have had nothing but trouble since.  The ISP claims they have made all the appropriate changes to my "connection" from their end.  They had to assign a new IP address, so I fixed all that on the router. I have upgraded the firmware on the router, I have reset it and the modem to factory specs and reconfigured everything.

Now to the actual problem.  The router stops "transmitting" data to/thru the cable modem at varying intervals.  I can be connected for 30 minutes or 30 seconds.  I have connected directly to my PC as well to insure that it is the "vendors" problem and not my router (I actually replaced my router thinking it was the possible problem).  But everything points to the cable modem platform.  I have traded in the cable modem once already as well.

The "help desk" technicians can't seem to help (to be fair they have tried).  But I believe it is a problem in how they are "configuring" the static IP.  I believe that they have set the MAC address of my router in their DHCP server to recieve the address they tell me is static.

If I re-initiate the router, through the web interface (save settings) it seems to come up again for a time.

I deal with Network issues, routing, and all manner of Admin tasks similiar to what they are doing (I prefer not to use "Static DHCP" addresses though)  and I can't seem to get the right answer.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
