Question

No default gateway, no internet connection

Asked by: adrianneave

I use an AJP laptop that I connect to my broadband internet account via a cable modem. Recently when I connected the laptop the internet connection came up with limited or no connectivity. When I checked I found that the default gateway was blank. I spoke to my ISP who confirmed that as far as they could tell the modem was working properly (all the right lights are flashing for what it's worth). They asked me to turn off the modem and laptop, leave it for a while then switch backon. No difference. They tell me the problem is at my end and suggested I restore winsock and winsock2. I tried this but still the same problem. I then tried LSPFix and now I have an IP address of 0.0.0.0 and no default gateway.
Does any body have any ideas that might help. I am afraid I am not fluent in tech speak though I can usually manage to follow instructions OK!
Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Check the cable possibly as well as the drivers for the NIC? When you connect the cable to the laptop do you get any lights indicating that the cable has connected properly?

by: adrianneavePosted on 2005-11-21 at 06:11:49ID: 15333729

Ethernet cable lights flash as normal. Drivers for NIC are up to date as well. I think I have read about a problem like this before and the winsock had to be repaired and also a couple of files had to be replaced in as well (.dll files?), but for the life of me I cannot remember what had to be done.

First, make sure your NIC is set to Autonegotiate speed and duplex.  If that doesn't work, change your NIC to 100 Half, and if that doesn't work, 10 Half.

If this doesn't fix the problem, try changing them from "Automatic" to Static - and assign the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway manually.  Also put in the DNS server if you have that info.  Does this resolve the problem?

Are you connecting wired or wireless?

You can reset the winsock drivers by "Right click My Computer, Properies, Device Management, Remove you network controller, reboot, all windows to reinstall the drivers" this will also reinstall the winsock.

Apologies for ingnorance.

When it's working correctly, from a command line, type "ipconfig /all".

Also, you could look in your router.

Have tried ipconfig /release, /renew - no apparent effect.
Have tried WinsockFix, no luck.

Subnetmask 255.255.0.0
Default gateway is blank
Forgot to note IP address (muppet!) but from what I have read on the web I believe that the address is not being issued by the modem / router

The only change I can recall making is installing software for my cellphone (O2 XDA Exec) to sync with outlook. Could that have caused a problem? I have installed same software on PC at work with no apparent side effects.

Can you take the laptop to the Internet connection where you're posting these messages from and verify it works there?  This will narrow it down to a client problem or a service problem.

Have you set Windows to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS servers automatically" then run ipconfig /renew?  Then run ipconfig /all and see if you have an IP address?

Maybe you could post the full output from ipconfig /all for us anyway?

Ian, not sure what a PCI network adapter is. Where do I get one?
The system hardware info says that the realtek is enabled and has no conflicts.

a PCI network adapter is just one that installs in a PCI slot on your motherboard...  Easy to install, and they don't cost much..  I have a stack of them in my supply room, just for the reasons mentioned here..

If you open your system up, you will see the slots where it installs...  just be sure to power off your system, and don't touch the motherboard with your hands as you install it (electrostatic can kill a MB)...  If you don't have a wriststrap, keep the computer plugged in (but off) and grab the case metal with one hand to make sure you are grounded when you place the NIC adapter into the slot..

IanTh and Fatal_Exception have not noticed that the problem PC is an AJP notebook computer.
You won't be able to install a PCI network card, though you may be able to install a PCMCIA/CardBus adapter.

I suspect the ethernet connector on the AJP, can you check that the gold contacts within the socket are not twisted, broken or packed with fluff?
Do you have access to a can of switch cleaner, or isopropyl alcohol?   If so, then give the contacts and gentle spay to clean off any corrosion!
There may be a similar connection problem at cable modem end.

Can you try a different network cable, and try wiggling the connector in the socket, or putting a little pressure on it, such as to push it closer to the contacts.

Regards

KD

Did you purchase this from a local retailer?  Even if you did not, you might be able to visit one (like a Best Buy or MicroCenter) and have them test it for you...  They could install a PCMCIA card in your PC Card slot, and see if it is your internal adapter...  Or you could purchase one yourself...  I carry a supply of 3Com Xjacks that I use in this scenario for testing, and even sell them pretty cheap to those that need them...

by: baconyiPosted on 2005-11-29 at 07:58:49ID: 15380901

sorry to anyone if this is redundant, but didnt have time to read every post....

try this:
 - goto device manager and verify device is working properly
      - if working properly:   goto command prompt and ping 127.0.0.1
( that is to verify if the NIC is working, if you can ping yourself)
      - if you can, then its a problem with the router or modem
if you can NOT, then its your network interface card that is faulty

Billy
PS - not sure how you connect, do you have the computer directly into the modem? or do you have a router?
if you have a router and you CAN ping the loopback address, then try resetting the router to default...
power down the modem and router, power on the modem until all lights stop flashing except for the activity light, then power on the router until the same, then power on your computer....
let me know the outcome please.

by: baconyiPosted on 2005-11-29 at 08:07:13ID: 15380991

Also - is there any way you can get a friend or someone with a laptop that they know works and try it at your place of conflict?

and check the lights when you plug in the ethernet cable, after you power everything on, is the light on the router lit up?
on the laptop, there should be 2 lights, a green and an amber, green means "go" which means connection is made, amber is activity (90% of ethernets have those lights, some might be diff color but regarless of color there still should be 2 lights, 1 for connectivity and the other for activity)

sounds like you cannot contact the dhcp which means its ur modem or router, but that could also be spyware/adware/viruses on your machine that is not enabling you to obtain a valid IP address, ive had clients with spyware or viruses that disable them from getting on internet.

im ruling out our NIC as the problem because in one of your posts, the NIC came back with a 169.x.x.x address which means it can still pick up an IP, a 169 will obviously not work on internet but that means the card itself is working, but test the loopback from my previous post and see if you can ping it.

by: adrianneavePosted on 2005-12-06 at 07:54:46ID: 15428431

Apologies for delay in replying. I will be able to test the laptop on a different network tomorrow so will post again then.
In the meantime the USB connection to my PDA is also failing, first time I have synced the PDA with the laptop for some weeks so quite possible that problem with that could have started at the same time. Would that suggest a different problem?

by: adrianneavePosted on 2005-12-12 at 04:53:00ID: 15465756

I have had a chance to connect the laptop to the network at work and I can access the internet no problem, IP address etc all present and correct. The PDA problem I now believe stems from trying to sync on two different PCs using activesync 4.1 so nothing to do with this I suspect.

by: Fatal_ExceptionPosted on 2005-12-12 at 05:21:30ID: 15465889

One thing you might try, and I would suggest this anyway, if only for your own security..  purchase a consumer grade router (like a Linksys) and use it to connect to your ISP's modem...  They are relatively cheap (under $50) and offer a layer of security to your LAN..  Let it get your DHCP IP Addressing from your ISP, and then you can statically setup everything on your laptop if it still cannot get the proper settings..  (although I have a feeling that if you do this, you will not need to)

If the router cannot get the proper config, then the problem certainly lies with your provider, and they need to resolve this..

So, what was the problem & solution?

by: adrianneavePosted on 2005-12-19 at 02:22:40ID: 15509944

Apologies, I thought I posted. The reason for closing off is that I know have a problem with an IRQL problem, BSOD and now a complete refusal to boot even from the recovery disk. The system hangs everytime. Therefore the broadband problem 'pales in to insignificance'. If it persists after I get the  nice AJP laptop working again I will be back for help again!
Thank you for all your help so far.
Regards and Merry christmas to all.
