Question

This is a new one.

Asked by: miloudi

Hi,

I have never seen such thing.
I have a very simpe setup
PC cable attached to a cable modem(dynamic ip addressing), internet is fine.
Once i add a linksys WRTG54 router, i get IPS but not internet....
Tried several things, making sure that the router is fine, tested it on a different environment(works just fine). Bougth a  new one, no changes.
If i say that it is my ISP, then how would i explain that the PC works fine connected directly to the modem.
and if i say that it is the route(tried two).
Called the ISP but they cannot seem to help since the modem is working...
I like the challenge but to be honest i have never seen such thing before.
One important detail, the connection(PC direct to cable modem) works only with that particular computer. I tried a brand new PC, no luck in getting a valid IP.
The cable modem was previously replaced......
I have setup lots of router and pixs but this one is new.......
I am going to start with contacting linksys to see if they have something...

Some ISP's "register" your MAC address (Machine Access Control), much like a network card serial number, and only allow that MAC to connect to the Internet. On your router there is a place to "clone" the MAC address. Connect the PC to the router and click clone and it will find and input the appropriate address. Then save. Should resolve the problem for you. You can also enter   ipconfig  /all    at a command line (DOS window) and it will display the MAC address as "Physical Address" if you want to enter it manually.

ps- Had a look at the WRT54G online manual and it doesn't seem to  have a clone button. To change the MAC go to the 'System' page of the router and 1/2 way down the page you will see MAC cloning. Click enable and enter the MAC address you found with   ipconfig  /all    from your computer. It will be a number like  FF G1 44 FG 23 12
Let me know if you have any problems.

Good luck, let us know how you make out. The fact that a second computer will not connect either, is a good indication we are on the right track.

First, disconnect the ethernet from you modem. Second, you need to unplug you modem from the AC power and plug it back in. Then you need to connect the ethernet from the router WAN or modem port to the cable modem, then plug in the power for the router. Then connect your computers. What is problably happening is that as a previous poster stated in that the modem may have 'locked' the MAC address of you computer to the IP. Unplugging the power will allow the modem to reset itself and give your router the IP address.
