Question

How to set up new router properly?

Asked by: sasllc

Comcast has installed a new router along with five static IPs; actually, they call it a "Business IP Gateway", and it's a Netgear model CG814CCRv2.  Since I'm getting no help from them, I need expert guidance on how to set it up properly.

Background: This small network has 6 XP PCs and one SBS server.  Four of the PCs are attached to a switch that's connected to the SBS server, so I'll ask SBS questions on that forum.  But for the other two PCs, they are both connected directly to the new router  They are both working fine in terms of internet access, after I manually configured their IP info.  In each case, I entered one of the static IPs Comcast provided for the IP address, followed by the gateway and DNS addresses Comcast provided.  The static IP addresses were in the range of 65.154.53.57 - .61, with a gateway of 65.154.53.62.

But I think I need to set up some port forwarding for these two PCs.  After I finally figured out how to get to the router setup at 10.1.10.1, I tried to set up port forwarding to send port 5631 to 65.154.53.60, but it kept telling me that was an invalid address.  So, seeing that the router was set up for DHCP in that 10.1.10.x range, I changed the internet setup on these computers for 'automatic', so they both got addresses of 10..1.10.x--and then I was able to specify those addresses successfully in port forwarding.

So, my questions are these:

1) Should I be using 10.1.10.x for the IP addresses on the computers?

2) If #1 is 'yes', then how can I effectively utilize these extra static IPs?  I got one static IP because we needed it for the SBS server.  But I went ahead and got extras in the hope that we could use them on these two PCs plugged directly into the router.  For example, one of them is running pcAnywhere host, and what we've done in the past, back when we had no static IPs, was to use the dns2go software to 'point' to our dynamic IP address, and then I forwarded the two pcAnywhere ports on our old router to the address on the LAN for our pcAnywhere host computer.  Users connected to it by specifying the dns2go address.

But I was hoping that by buying extra static IPs that I could assign a fixed address to this pcAnywhere computer--say 65.154.53.60--and the users could connect directly with that computer using the static IP address, rather than a dns2go address.

Yet I see no way to set that up with this new router.  And IF we are supposed to use addresses in the 10.1.10.x range, then I'm even more confused as to how we would set it up for users to connect directly to that computer.

Any clear guidelines would be greatly appreciated!  TIA
