Unable to ping router from internal network

Asked by pgm554 in DSL Lines / Cable Internet, Network Routers

I am having problem pinging a Linksys router with a static public ip on the WAN port from inside a local subnet.
Equipment :
Comcast SMC8014,Linksys Wireless N router (latest firmware)

The scenario :
The SMC acts as a gateway/cable modem/ switch.
The SMC has a static IP which I can ping from my local subnet (10.x.x.x)
The router WAN port  has a public static IP which can be pinged from the outside (from a different ISP)
I cannot ping this IP from the internal 10 network.
If I hook up a laptop with the same public IP ,I can ping it from the 10 network.

IT looks aif it may be an issue with SMC and Comcast, but Comcast has been of not much help.
And yes the router is set up to reply to ICMP packets.

Any Ideas?
