Question

Reset Speedstream 5200 to Access Web Interface

Asked by: CooperRiis

Hello Folks,
I have a couple of Speedstream 5200's that I need to access the web interface to change the VPI/VCI.

I have followed the reset and web access instructions to no avail.

Here is what i have done:  push and hold the reset switch till power LED blinks red once. Continue holding reset till power blinks alternate red/green for approx 4 seconds ( I let it blink red 3 to 4 times.). At this point modem reboots (all lights light and then goes back to standard power and ethernet light only.

From what I understand it should be reset to factory default at this point with an IP of 192.168.254.254.

With modem plugged directly to laptop via cat5 ( no DSl line) I set my IP config in the laptop to an IP addy of 192.168.254.100, mask 255.255.255.0, and gateway of the modem, 192.168.254.254.

I then try to log into web interface via MS Internet Explorer using http://192.168.254.254. I get page cannot be displayed. I have also tried http://speedstream with no success.

I know these modems have web interface as I have been in them before. A Windstream tech talked me through it once before awhile back. I don't recall if there is a special trick to accessing it. It should be straight forward as that is how I have accessed many other modems/routers in the past.

I did not have a DSl line plugged in to the modem during these attempts, I did when the Windstream tech talked me into it. But I don't see why that would be necessary for accessing the interface.

What I need to be able to do is to try and change the VCI and VPI settings of the modem.

If anyone knows a way of doing this without getting to the web interface, that would be fine.

Thanks very much or any assistance!

Bingo. I am in the GUI. In Bridge Management Interface. However I only have the Home and a reboot option on the left side. I guess I now need to research  getting it from bridged mode to router mode so I have some configuration options. Thanks for the assistance.

Just wondering why all the docs I have read on this show a default IP of 192.168.254.254? Also, any quick and simple pointers on getting from bridged mode without the config options to router mode? :-) I guess this may require a firmware upgrade. Thanks.

The Part Number 060-E240-004 that you have is a original Alltel Bridge Only unit and it requires a Firmware Update to turn it into a Router. Since it is a Windstream (formerly Alltel) Bridge only Modem you have to supply PPPoE to use it with most ISPs.  The only way to access the very limited, mostly useless Web Interface is by adding its MAC ID manually to the ARP Table per the FAQ link posted earlier since there is not a running DHCP server on Bridge Modems. Only Routers have DHCP servers and that is why a Bridge only Modem does not hand out an IP Address to any connected PCs.

Windstream offers a Firmware upgrade to turn the Bridge into a Router, but only to its Customers. Plus you have to install their Broadband Checkup Center in order to obtain it.

Alternative to Tango Manager

Question

Does Windstream currently offer any alternatives to Tango Manager?

Answer

Starting in May in 2004, we began offering a firmware upgrade for the Speedstream 5200. This firmware upgrade will eliminate the need for Tango Manger on your computer by initializing the PPPoE connection in the Speedstream 5200. Windstream will support the PPPoE setup on the Speedtream 5200.

Windstream also strongly recommends in installing the Broadband Checkup Center, which is available for download at www.windstream.net.

Additional Info:

A Bridge only Speedstream (5100, 5200, 4100, 4200) does not need the VPI/VCI to be set or changed as it automatically supports the following presets Virtual Circuits.

* 0/35
* 8/35
* 0/43
* 8/43
* 0/51
* 8/51
* 0/59
* 8/59

PPPoE will need to be supplied for it to connect with most ISPs.

That is the Router documentation you are reading. The Bridge documentation says there is no IP address since DHCP is not included with Bridge Modems as discussed earlier.

This FAQ explains the proper way to tell what you have.

Relevant Products

5100 and 5200 post-Aug 2002 models

Overview

I can't get to the Web Management Interface on my 5100 or 5200 modem.
or
When I put http://speedstream in my address or location bar I get a "The page cannot be displayed" page.

Solution

The Speedstream 5100 and 5200 can be configured as either a bridge or a router by the Internet Service Provider (ISP). After being configured as a Bridge there are no user controlled settings so the Web Management Interface is not used. If configured as a Router the Web Management interface should be accessable. Regardless of the configuration the Router documentation is included because some ISPs install a Router upgrade.

Most SpeedStream 5100 are configured as a Bridge (but not always) and most SpeedStream 5200 are configured as a router (but not always).

Bridge or Router? To see if your product is configured as a Bridge or Router check your Default Gateway. If your Default Gateway is 192.168.254.254 your unit is a Router should have access to the Web Management Interface. Otherwise your product is configured as a Bridge and will not have access to the Web Management Interface.

If your Default Gateway shows that your product is configured as a Router and you cannot access the Web Management Interface contact your ISP for troublshooting assistance.

(Note: See below for instructions on how to identify the Default Gateway on your PC.)
