I am moving house into the sticks and have found sadly that Virgin Media doesn't have cable there. The exchange provides ADSL MAX according to
http://www.samknows.com/ but there is no LLU (Local Loop Unbundling), so we've got whatever BT provides for bandwidth. Apparently it looks good for 2M and may get something closer to 8M. I can live with the loss of bandwidth, but I'm not happy about losing availability. I work from home and am very dependent on Internet access. I've been really happy with NTL/Virgin Cable in the last few years, because the connection has been rock solid. I don't anticipate things being quite so good in the sticks with ADSL.
Here's my plan:
(1) Get an ISP to provide its "up to 8M" service over ADSL.
(2) Get a mobile broadband deal as a fall-back, to use during outages. (I've fond that T-Mobile is the best option there. I'd *only* be using this during ADSL outages, because I don't get out and about enough to warrant mobile broadband otherwise.)
Bearing in mind that I only want Internet connectivity by ADSL (no managed services), is there any reason to choose one ISP over another other than price?
According to seriousnick at
http:Q_22867088.html#20013513 I should go for Zen. I'm willing to pay for good service if there is something to be gained, but in the absence of LLU aren't ISPs simply reselling BT's infrastructure, if you don't need to use their managed services? Shouldn't I therefore save a few quid and go for the cheapest? If I bought into Zen would I be buying "The Emperor's New Clothes"?
