Hi,

This is the best solution. Use MRTG it is freeware, you can install it on a windows machine. It use SNMP and Perl an IIS.

It gets SNMP info from a SNMP capable managable switch and draw the up and download of each port.

See an example on http://www.aboutdebian.com/mrtg1.jpg

It is very easy to set up. See for the configuration guide:

P.S. if you need assistant , please let me know !

MRTG is the indeed the one of the best solutions. the only problem is that it does need a significant configuration done by the person who install it. and it is limited to the HTML pages it produce.

You could use  PRTG wich could be instaled direct to Windows without need to  configure anything except the access to router or switch.  PRTG as well gives the monitor for NETFLOW so you could nicely separate and have a look into different statistic data (eg which protocol are using the most bandwith, which PC have the most connections etc)

It is not a freeware but the do give a trial period so you could test it.

you can  find it here http://www.paessler.com/prtg/download

just an update...   PRTG is freeware if you plan to use it for up to 10 sensor.

So i belive if you have a small office it could be your solution :)

Hi,

I agree with you, but on the other hand MRTG has beautifull graphs very clear and simple. Only UP and Donwload. Also you can cutomize it with HTML/JAVA/Perle to you hand. That's true, you need to be handy with these tools. PRTG is and commercial tool, MRTG is OPEN SOURCE.

Let's put it in this way, you will start with PRTG and wil end with MRTG (in this case).

So it depends on Ali, is he more a LINUX or a Windows guy ?  :)

Wiscom, i belive this debate is off topic :)
i use both, and there are advantages in both (MRTG  on linux and on win platform), just for the author of this question i belive it is quite simpler to install PRTG and just use it out of the box.
insted of going through installing PERL, then configuring from command prompt and through services and then directing to web folder... :)

ali_alannah: You could also use Cacti  or its equivalent EzCacti

Cacti is full platform for LAN monitoring, it supports SNMP and  NETFLOW protocol and it is free.

As well if you  know how to use and create Virtual Machines... you could easily download EzCacti which is already configured platform for monitoring the lan. Basicly it is linux in virtual box, but you dont need to know linux for this solution, everything is controled through HTML browser
