the current setup is

phone jack - dsl modem - router linksys wireless B

i will be duplicating that, but using the new wireless G router

Well you can configure the router up stairs first with your computer to setup all the security settings and make sure you have the proper wep/wpa configured. Besides, I believe the new linksys routers requires a cd for the intial setup compared to the previous models? Either way, you can complete your setup with the computer and router then move the router downstairs and hook it up to the DSL modem.

First thing to do is get the new computer working on the DSL router.  That way you can talk to the DSL router and know that all is good.

Since you haven't told us what make/model the verizon DSL router is, we do not know if it uses the same internal addressing scheme as the Linksys you bought.

So take everything downstairs, plug the new computer into the DSL router, figure out what IP you get.  Then once you have the new computer working and on the internet take  the new computer and plug it in to the new Linksys wireless G router, it has wired ports on the back, or they usually do.  Figure out what addressing scheme that this router uses and change the set up so that it will talk to the Verizon DSL router. Most linksys use 192.168.1.1   I think the verizon DSL internal address might be 192.168.1.1 too, so this won't work.  Change the Linksys to 192.168.1.254 or something

OH, I didn't see that you had a B already.  So, yeah, just duplicate the settings on the G with the B settings, do your WEP or WPA2 and away you go.  Start with wired first to get it all setup upstairs.

so if i copy all the settings from B router to G router,

would i still need to hard hook up the new computer to the G router thru the LAN

or can i just search for my wireless router and insert th WPA password as if i was at a wifi location? or will i have to install verizon dsl onto the new computer

thanks

i split the points because i actually used both of these answers because i had 2 houses to do.

the completely new house, i had to do what HyeTech suggested and plug in the computer with the DSL and Router and then move it to its location and leave the router and DSL where they were going to be stationed.

the neighbors house that had the current setup but just needed to change the router and install the new computer, i used atrevido's suggestion and just copied the router settings by going to 192.168.1.1

After setup on both, i was able to add the additional laptops y simply finding them like at a wi-fi location and entering in the secure WPA2 code.

thanks for both your help!
