Question

Connecting Firebox to DSL Modem problems

Asked by: GreatSlaveIT

I'm in a bind.  I need to get this modem up and running on my firebox core x750e, but it is giving me problems.

I have a speedstream 4200 modem.  The DSL line is set up with a static IP and I can connect the modem directly to a laptop that is configured with the proper IP addresses and the Internet works great.  When I plug that modem directly to the firebox and set the IP addresses in the network config section of the policy manager, the system manager shows the external DSL connection as [failed].  I also cannot ping the IP of the connection externally, so that confirms to me that the system manager is correct.

I'm not sure what my next step should be.  I thought of buying a router and setting up NAT between it and the firebox, because I can successfully connect through a router with the static IP information I was given..  but that doesn't seems a little ridiculous.  I also need to have this DSL modem as the gateway for one of the branch office VPNs, so I don't know how that would work with the router in between.

Thanks for your help guys.  I need to get this fixed today because im flying out to the remote office tomorrow morning!

Another thing to add, is that the system manager shows the DSL connection as [External:Available] for about half a minute or roughly 1,000 packets, then it suddenly goes black and shows [External:Failed]...

Sounds like you need to set your DSL box into bridge mode, not sure what box you have but your ISP should be able to help you set this up! Usually you hit the internal IP of your box and there are a few screens to set it up.

I was thinking that too, but the problem is the DSL box doesn't dish out IPs, so I am left with a 169.254 address.  This leads me to believe the modem is already set up in bridge mode.   I tried resetting the modem because I read online that the default configuration for a speedstream 4200 is "routed/bridge", which enables the dhcp server, but resetting didn't seem to do anything.  I'm thinking maybe the modem has customized firmware specific to my ISP.

Sounds as if you may be in bridge mode or the DHCP is just turned off. Follow the steps below for bridge mode then verify that you have the correct PPoE user name and password in your router(assuming your ISP is using PPoE)

Also you will have to set your IP address manually to reflect the 192.168.254.x network.

Siemens Speedstream 4200 Bridged Configuration
1. Open your web browser and go to »192.168.254.254/. Log in using admin as
the username and using admin as the password. You will be presented with the PPP
Setup page. Completely ignore all the settings on this PPP Setup page.
2. Click on the Setup item along the left-hand side of the page. A submenu will
open displaying detailed configuration pages. Locate and click on the WAN Interface
item.
3. Click on the uppermost Delete button to delete all circuits shown on the WAN
Interface area. Once everything is deleted, it should look like this.
4. Click on the Add New VC button to add a new circuit.
5. Change the VPI to 0 and change the VCI to 35. Set the Encapsulation Type to
LLC. Click on the Next button to continue.
6. Select RFC-2684 Bridged as the Protocol. Click on the Finish button.
7. Locate and click on the DHCP item beneath the Setup menu.
8. Click on the Disabled radio button and then click on the Save Settings button
near the bottom.
9. A notice will be displayed reminding you to reboot the modem. Go ahead and
click on the Reboot button to reboot now.

I tried setting the network adaptor on my computer to 192.168.254.10 and then typing http://192.168.254.254 into the browser, but I get a Page Cannot be Displayed.

Unless you changed the IP address of the Speedstream 4200 that should be the correct default address. Make sure you are using the correct subnetmask 255.255.255.0 and set your gateway to 192.168.254.254. (I don't mean to insult you, not sure on your knowledge)

Who is your ISP? Some ship them with different default IP's. BigPond ships with 10.0.0.138, while Optus are shipped with 10.1.1.1, but default is 192.168.254.254.

Thanks everybody for your help.  Unfortunately, none of the responses provided the solution to my problem.  For the benefit of anybody reading this, the problem was that I did not have Watchguard's Fireware Pro software, so multiple WAN connections are not allowed except for strictly incoming connections.

Should have called Watchguard tech support in the first place!  Thanks again guys for your answers.  I'm not sure what I need to do now with these points.
