Question

How to configure Dual csu/dsu WIC cards on a 1760 cisco router to use 2 T1 lines.

Asked by: tidewaterskanska

Situation:
MPLS frame line with Sprint using a 1760 4 slot router.
Slot 0 and Slot 1 each contain a single port csu/dsu WIC. Slot 3 and 4 remain empty.
I have two T1 lines, two ISP provided ip addresses.
I only need a basic config plus the connection to the remote frame site.
I have upgraded the factory installed IOS to an PLUS IOs to support BGP and dual WICS.
I have the information needed to implement BGP.
I was given instruction to assign only one ISP address to one WIC, and create a virtual access port between the two WICS.
That doesn't make any sense to me. I would think I wold assign the ISP provided addresses to each WIC, the crete a virtual Access Port for my fastEthernet port to communicate with to allow my clients to have a gateway onto the frame line. Am I correct?

Next, how do I combine the two wics to one virtual access port, and how to make the connection between my fastethernet port and the virtual port.

I have scoured Cisco's web site for an entire day and found no sample configs and no refences to a router that uses two wic cards, I have only found a single dual port wic configuration which won't work for my situation.

Thank you in advance,
James

If your ISP is providing you a "bonded" 3Mb using 2xT1's and you need to configure a Virtual Template, here is a good sample config:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk713/tk507/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080093d69.shtml

There is nothing that you need to create between the virtual template interface and your Fastethernet port to communicate. They will simply be two routed interfaces and traffic should flow between them. If you want to use NAT or anything like that, please post details of what you need.

Configure Cisco 1760 to use 2 T1's with 2 CSU/DSU Cards

If you place the above line in a search field it will bring a solution that is extremely similar to what I need. One major difference is that I have BGP enabled. I only need a basic config to be able to ping the other side of the MPLS network. This persons frame-relay encapsilatio type is IETF, I am guessing I can just change mine to MPLS?

I will post a copy of my config after I redo it based on the configuration provied above, perhaps that will give us a good starting point. I will try to post that config this afternoon or tomorrow. Today is 01.16.06

Thank you,

James

Here is a copy of my config and some information that was provided to me.

remarks from information provider: (I have added questions in ( ) to these instructions/remarks.

The basic commands are as follows but not complete because you will have the two T1's together as a virtual access.
You LAN segment is 10.12.57.0 255.255.255.0.

interface serial a/b (What is a/b to signify?)
ip address x.x.x.210 x.x.x.252

interface fa x/y (What is x/y to signify? I assume fa means the fast ethernet port?)
ip address 10.12.57.n 255.255.255.0 (I assume the "n" to be any number I asign from 1 to 254)

router bgp xxxxx
no auto-summary
no synchronization
neighbor x.x.x.209 remote-as xxxx
network 10.12.57.0 mask 255.255.255.0

Information provided by the ISp:
Your router ID and router interface IP address will be:
slmpls-$$$$$-1/x.x.x.210, Subnet Mask x.x.x.252 ( I assume this is the address that would go to Serial0/0)
slmpls-$$$$$-1/x.x.x.214, Subnet Mask x.x.x.252 ( I assume this is the address that would go to Serial1/0)
GLOBAL MPLS Domestic router ID and router interface IP address will be:
sl-pe3-rly/x.x.x.209, Subnet Mask x.x.x.252 ( I assume this is the ROUTE/Gateway of last resort which is actually BGP? )
sl-pe3-rly/x.x.x.213, Subnet Mask x.x.x.252 ( This looks like a second ROUTE/Gateway of last resort which makes no sense to me, wouldn't there only be one?)

SPRINT SAYS IT USES HDLC FOR ENCAPSULATION, AND PPP FOR NON CISCO ROUTERS. (when I uses PPP on serial0/0 the port was up and line protocol was up, 63 bytes sent and received. When I switched to HDLC the Line Protocol would not come up.

HERE IS THE CURRENT CONFIG.

>interface serial a/b (What is a/b to signify?)
Serial 0/0 ; 1/0 etc

Try this:

interface Serial0/0
 ip address 172.20.134.210 255.255.255.252
 no encapsulation ppp
!
interface Serial1/0
 ip address 172.20.134.214 255.255.255.252
 no encapsulation ppp
!

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 172.20.134.209
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 172.20.134.213
!
Keep your BGP configuration as is.

I'm afraid that you are not getting a 'bonded' link but rather two equal-cost routes. You will still get total throughput, failover and redundancy, but no single connection over 1.5Mb

>SPRINT SAYS IT USES HDLC FOR ENCAPSULATION
There is NO OPTION to use a multilink virtual-templace using HDLC. You *must* use PPP. This is why I say you are not getting what you may have thought you were getting.

I can't ping the routes. I have an AL light on one csu/dsu. The line protocols will not come up. Here is the current config with seriala/b output and show IP route which states the gateway of last resort is not set? Sprint says they tested the lines as far as they could and that the problem is with my csu/dsu (s) which they cannot get to. Any more ideas? Thank you in advance. James.

Does not look like the telco has enabled these T1's properly. I would call them and make them stay on the phone with me until I was satisfied.

Unless/until they are enabled and up/up you will not see any routes

MLPPP is very CPU intensive, I would be very suprised if you don't experinece problems with your router after your circuits are straightened oout.
