This is indeed a solution, but it is not an answer to my question. Isn't there any way to use the IE I already have?

Browse All TopicsHello experts,
I am stuck with a machine that has no cd-rom, windows 95 and IE3 with a modem. The connection to the net is ok, but when I click on a link (or enter address), all I can see is the source code of the webpage, no matter which one. Any idea how to fix this?

spacebrain - I don't have one that old laying about, but I'd look in the something like a "tools" menu tab for something akin to "options" and perhaps "advanced" under that to see if there is a setting for viewing the source as a default.
Something you need to know, though, is there are a number of serious security flaws in earler versions of IE - all the way up through 4.0 and 5.0. I would take meverest's advice and upgrade as soon as humanly possible.
Good luck!
> all I can see is the source code of the webpage,
IE keeps a table of "which program handles which type of download".
For example, downloading a '.RA' or '.RM' or '.RAM' file
launches the RealNetworks player,
while downloading a '.ZIP' file launches an "ask the user what to do" window.
Somehow, your copy of IE has "lost" the line in the table
which tells it to handle '.html' and '.htm' files with
its "internal" processing-routines.
Compare/contrast the "helpers" table in your malfunctioning computer
with the same table in the computer that you used to post to Experts Exchange.
Following Otta's idea, you could right click an HTML file on your hard drive while holding down the "shift" key. Select "Open with" and when the window appears showing which software you can use make sure you click the tick box at the bottom that says "Always you this program". Then select "IEXPLORE.EXE" and click "Open". See if that helps. That will associate all HTML files with IE.
The other option is to check your Internet settings. Right click the IE icon on the desktop and select properties. Somewhere there will be an option to check that IE is the default. Make sure this is checked. I no longer have IE3 so can't tell you exactly which tab this option will be on but it will be there somewhere.
Somewhat off-topic, but important.

i'd reinstall IE, or use dowload netscape.
...
you can download netscape by using a commandline ftp client - go to dos, enter "ftp ftp.netscape.com" and log in as username 'anonymous' and email address as password.
you will find the browser downloads in pub/communicator/<langage>
once you have a working browser, you can go to microsoft and download IE if thats what you prefer.
cheers.
