So, one of my clients just switched from a dynamic to static IP with Verizon DSL. The network is setup like this: Westel DSL Modem > Linksys Router > Switch. There is also a Win2k3 Standard domain server that hosts files and provides network backups. The clients on the network obtain IP's from the Linksys router. The DNS servers are manually set in each client, as I have found it provides a speed boost over obtaining them automatically. WINS is setup on the Win2k3 server and manually configured on each client to point to the server's static (internal) IP. This is how we have run with a dynamic IP for years and never had a problem.
I have made the changes in the router config for the static IP, subnet, gateway and DNS, as provided by Verizon.
The issue after the switch:
Most websites will not load. Some load VERY slowly, and a few are fine. The ones that are fine are small, unknown sites. Larger ones like Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. either load VERY slowly or not at all. It seems like a DNS issue of some kind. We have been around and around with Verizon and they are insistent that the issue is with us and not them.
So I took a laptop, not in any way connected to the internal domain. Plugged it directly into the Westel, bypassing the router and network and configured it's connection options for the static IP. I also disabled Norton AV and the Windows firewall on the machine. Result: Exact same thing. Now this, in my opinion, tells me the issue is with the modem or our local Verizon CO. I also tried several other DNS server IP's from Verizion, both East and West coast with the same result. I'm really at a loss here. Verizon still says the issue is with us, even after we tried the direct connection to the laptop. The modem is the same one we've had from the beginning and never had an issue with it.
One other thing is that we host Symantec Corporate AV from the domain server. I have not disabled it yet, and won't be able to try that until I get back to the office this evening. But I'm doubting that it would cause this issue anyway.
Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks You.
