The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

intermittent "page cannot be displayed" error - dns problem?

Asked by Philipk in Internet Service Providers (ISP)

Hi,

I've been having some intermittent problems connecting to websites. My isp is BT, and I have a 1 port BT voyager router. Here's a detailed description of what happens:

I put the computer on at 09.30 , pressed Internet Explorer (IEx) and raised Google. I then went on to virgin.net successfully. I left IEx open (minimising it) and went on to other work.

I maximised IEx at 11.55 (ie after 2hrs 25 mins), tried BA.com and went there successfully. I then used the net until 12.15. Again I minimised BA.com and did other work.

Back at 15.00 by maximising, tried virgin.net - it went there slowly but successfully. I then closed IEx at 15.15.

At 18.15 I sent an e mail, and then tried to activate IEx. Got "Cannot display this page" which should have been Google, my home page. So I typed 209.85.135.147 in to the bar, Google came up and I was able to go to virgin (though again rather slowly) and to BA. I shut IEx down at 18.30

Returning at 21.40 (after 3 hrs, 10 mins) attempted to activate IEx, but without success - "cannot display this page" - google again.

So I went through the pings.

Pinged 192.168.1.1. - my router and got a reply
attempted to activate IEx, but got "cannot display..."

pinged www.google.com and got "ping request could not find host, please check name and try again
Tried IEx but with no success

pinged 209.85.135.147 and got a successful reply of 4 lines of pinging
tried IEx, but with no success

Back to the IEx screen, put 209.85.135.147 into the bar, google came up. Tried virgin, no success, tried BA no success, tried google again with no success "cannot display...etc"

So switched off at 21.50, waited 10 mins, switched on again and google comes up, as does virgin as does BA. and now at 22.20 I have tried virgin again and there it is.

Can anyone help me find a solution to this problem? I guess it's something to do with DNS, but can't quite figure out how to pin it down.

Philip
