Question

tool for troubleshooting browser connections

Asked by: KristjanLaane

hello!

a couple of times a day, really annoyingly, my browser stops displaying webpages, Firefox just says "Server not found", and refresh does not help straight away generally, sometimes helps in a minute, sometimes in five. And then can go again.

Could you suggest any kind of network connection troubleshooting tool that i could use to locate the source of the problem? Ideally i would type in www.google.com and the tool would tell me whether it might be a DNS problem, or too many simultaneous connections, or whatever, or the tool would show me step by step how far the connection process got? Does Firefox have any built in troubleshooting or an add-on, or any stand-alone soft?

thanks.

p.s. i have Vista SP2.

To troubleshoot something like that I would usually recommend d3tr from (www.d3tr.de).  You can get a ping running to a server you know is good and see if it shows that your internet connection is down when your browser can't return a result.  The reason I prefer this to a simple ping is that you can see where the connection is failing.

thanks! it produced the following output, what is 213.120.176.178 ? seems the problem arises there as i lost a lot of the packets at that point, what might be wrong? is it a DNS problem, as when i typed www.neti.ee into browser i got "Server not found" whereas when i typed the IP address (195.50.209.245) the page displayed properly and without much delay?

although if i use the tool for an ip rather than a hostname, packets still get lost at 213.120.176.178 (tho less i think).
i.e. the hop with average ping 31 from source ip to first gateway at 81.148.0.1 is high and undesirable, but i dont think that this could cause "Server not found" ? i.e. the source of the "SErver not found" on browsing seems to arise due to packet loss at 213.120.176.178 ?

Have you tried switching DNS servers?  I'd try using the opendns servers from www.opendns.com.  They are 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222.

The lost packets at that address could also be caused if it has a firewall that drops pings.  If you could access the server by ip address but not by dns then it sure suggests a problem with your dns server.

thanks! after changing dns, the problem still occurred at first, but then disappeared i.e. i need to test a few more days to see if the issue is resolved or the issue might be traffic dependent at 213.120.176.178 for instance (sunday connection was really bad).
