Internet Sharing
Hello,
I know this question has probably been asked in one form or another but here it is again: I am trying to sharing my high-speed internet access between two computers. Here is some basic information:
MASTER = 1 Gig Athlon
Linksys Networking Card
Windows ME
Secondary Cpu: PIII
Linksys Networking Card
Windows 98
Linksys 4 port stackable 10/100 hub, Entire house is hard-wired wired with cat5 cable.
I can plug both computers into the networking ports in the walls and setting up the drives as shared I am able to see the other computer(s) and transfer files between them. I know the cabling is ok.
When I plug the modem line into the upink port I can still access it on my computer through the hub (I don't think this is the right way to do it, I notice a decrease in speed of connection when this happens but it is the cloisest think I can get to getting it to work).
I used the home networking wizard on windows ME to create a networking setup diskj for windows 98. After loading the disk It runs me through the connections wizard but when I clik finish it doesn't do anything. I have no Idea what to do at this point.
I want to be able to use the secondary computer to browse the web at the same time as my primary. It seems like I have all the equipment in place but I do not know enough to get it to work.
Feel free to post a reply to get more info if you need it, Thanks in advance.

Start here
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/
check both the file and then internet and ICS,
Also look at
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/support/troubleshoot_index.htm
If you can not get this to work, I would buy a $40 Router ( Linksys, DLINK, Netgear ) and let it do NAT.
It will be faster than software ICS, and you will not need to have the main computer on at all.
I hope this helps !

Thanks for the post, Please forgive my ignorance but what is the difference between a router and a HUB?
Also, the link you pointed me to states I should have two NIC cards in my master computer to enable internet sharing. If this is true then I need to get another card, which is not a problem but before I buy it I'd like some clarification:
Is there any way to do this with the equipment and infrastructure I currently have?
Thanks
John

I would like to amplify the point made by SysExpert about a router. Definitely a better way to go than ICS.

The term broadband commonly refers to high-speed Internet access that is always on and faster than the traditional dial-up access. Broadband includes several high-speed transmission technologies such as digital subscriber line (DSL), cable, fiber optics, wireless (for which there is a separate topic), satellite and broadband over powerlines (BPL).
