Thats the official faq it appears and hopefully checking those out can answer your question
If I remember correctly though cable modems do not need configuring. Any configuration is usually undertakin by your ISP.

Thanks , but I DO need to catch the configuration interface of that modem .

by: chicagoanPosted on 2003-10-03 at 03:23:20ID: 9483559

DOCSIS cable modems are configured via TFTP. Every time the cable modem is powered on, it looks in its configuration file for the address of an TFTP server and for a file name. This file is the Docsis configuration file that, among other things, sets a cap for the modem’s download/upload bandwidth. The cable modem then retrieves that file and connects to the backbone.  There generally is no web configuration interface.

Here's the manual for your modem:

Soorry , I think you all do not understand me .
chicagoan , to configure cable modem via TFTP or whatever you want , the cable modem have to pass a few steps of ranging/connecting to a cmts . The problem with cable modems is that they do not want to see any cmts sometimes . Thats why I need to configure that modem via Ethernet .
I know that I can use SNMP for that purpose but howto can't do a proper snmpset query .
That's why I posted my questiion . PipeRider have web interface that only shows diagnistic information . So I thought it is impossible to not have configuration web interface . I have found a manual for PipeLine software in french (I understand nothing) , but see they wrote something like "To connect to configuration interface type http://my.piperider in your browser" what is fullish , you see .
So are you sure it dose not have config interface such my favorit SB4200s ?

http://www.netwide.net/users/CableGuy/CableUnCap.zip has a suite of tools to query your modem, format a config file, etc.

Thanks , chicagoan , it's a very usefull thing and it will help me later , but in that moment is not the exact tool I need .
Full description of the problem :
I am a network adminstrator in a company provide cable access . We are working with MotorolaSB&WebstarDPX modems . Sometimes users have own modems and want to be connected through it . I have seen many CMs , but PipeRider for the first time . What I have seen :
1. After connecting modem to HFCnet it seemed do not discover downstream frequencies at all . The CMTS do not register any try from thos modem , the cable LED is not blinking .
2. I connected a comp to Eth port of modem and saw it geted ip address from dhcp server of modem .
3. http://192.168.100.1 showed me diagnostic page , where the downstream frequency was 0Mhz and stayed always the same .
4. I download piperider.mibs and read that they have privare OIDs called "Preffered Frequescy" . I connect SNMP agent of modem and done a walk , that showed me a preffered frequency different of mine . I think that is the problem of not scanning the band .
5. All other values was clean , no ip addresses , no config files , the Admin status was allowed .
6. I tried to set frequency value to my freq , but I can't connect any RW community , only public and it is RO .
So , after CM don't knows any IP address of server and it can't connect to CMTS , how to use this tool ?

by: chicagoanPosted on 2003-10-04 at 05:23:16ID: 9490652

If your snmp walk shows the address of the TFTP server, can't you construct a configuration file with the proper values, put a pc on the ethernet side with that address and let the modem grab it?

by: brabardPosted on 2003-10-04 at 06:30:02ID: 9490797

"5. All other values was clean , no ip addresses , no config files , the Admin status was allowed ."
Note "no ip addresses"! I mean including server addresses .

by: brabardPosted on 2003-10-04 at 06:31:41ID: 9490800

Btw , just an idea blinked in my mind . Will the modem discover for DHCP server on Eth port ?
I will try it ...

by: chicagoanPosted on 2003-10-04 at 06:38:29ID: 9490820

The modem will generall have a static (private) ip address on the ethernet side and initially get it's config from the DHCP server address on the cable side, but if it's not syncing freq's - I'm not quite sure it could work ar all.

by: brabardPosted on 2003-10-04 at 11:49:18ID: 9492044

No , it isn't work , I have tried it .
First , the ethernet port is not an interface , it was stupid by my side .
Second , the basics of docsis excludes obtainig anything from eth port , I heve read down some more documents .
I think the only chance I have is to burn default frequency by SNMP , some ideas bout community ?
Btw , I thank you again for your replies .

The problem is that I have to run this modem to monday ...

by: brabardPosted on 2003-10-04 at 14:33:35ID: 9492539

I mean till monday .
Could it be reached through RS232 ?

by: chicagoanPosted on 2003-10-04 at 16:16:01ID: 9492827

I think if after resetting the unit and making sure the "lock" button is off, it does not find your frequencies in use, you'd have to get to the manufacturer somehow, I'm not aware of a serial or other 'inband' configuration routine.

by: brabardPosted on 2003-10-04 at 16:36:06ID: 9492896

Hmm , the "lock" is off by sure , but it don't want to scan for any frequencies . That's the problem .
Thank you anyway , I think I have to close that posting, cause the problem is very specific .
Sorry for "C" , but I have to solve the problem my own mind .
Thank you for the "ModemCap" tool - I will use it .

Best Regards
Brabard
