Question

Keep losing IP address after 5 minutes

Asked by: FirePits

Here's my situation.....I am running XP home and have a cable internet connection that is NOT behind a router/firewall. If I disable the LAN connection and then enable it my internet will work fine for about 5 minutes or so until I cannot view any pages, then I go to Repair the LAN connection and it gives me the error that it cannot 'Renew IP address'. I have to then disable and enable for the connection to work again!! Help?

First, I would try repairing your IP Stack..  Dnload and run this utility....

Winsock Fix

http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/WinsockXPFix.exe

Next I would call your cable company and ask that a technician come out to replace your modem...

But before any of this is done, please go and purchase a NAT router to protect you from a variety of threats...    You can use the onboard W XP firewall, but I still recommend a hardware solution...

FirePits,

I'd have to agree with FE on the router... get yourself some protection on that LAN, or losing an IP address will become the least of your worries.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of modem are we talking about?  Brand and model might help here.

First question:  What do you mean your internet stops working?  Please be specific with what you are noticing after 5 minutes.  Can you surf the web/can you get emai/can you ping www.cisco.com/can you ping 198.133.219.25 ?

If you can ping websites by IP address only then you have a DNS issue most likely due to a corrupt TCP/IP stack.  Reinstall it.

If you can ping websites but cannot view webpages try disabling your software firewall or security and see if you can view webpages again by closing and re-opening your webbrowser.  If still not working, make sure you are not using a proxy in your web browser settings.  Make sure the website you are going to is not the only one you cant view.

Check your tcp/ip settings and make sure you are using automatic settings for ip address and dns server address.

Try reinstalling your LAN connection through the new connection wizard.

Are you using ethernet or usb connection to your cable modem?

If you are using usb try another usb port.  If you are using ethernet reseat the ethernet cable or try another one.  Do you have a virus running an extreme amount of bandwidth on your connection all the time that you are unaware of?  If so you should get alot of packet loss from an extended ping test (ping -t www.cisco.com  in the command prompt, control C to end it)

Might be a bad NIC or cable modem as well, but that is generally the last thing you will want to check as it is the hardest to determine.

Give us more information about what you are noticing/seeing and we will be able to much better help you.

Who is your cable provider?
Some cable providers track MAC addresses, if you changed computers or NIC cards then your MAC address will be different from the one that you originally registered with.

Probably not the problem but worth checking.

Yea, but if it were the MAC address, he would not be able to connect at all...  :)
