The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Can't get online with DSL modem and Linksys wireless G router.  Want advice on new router to buy.

Asked by alanlsilverman in Broadband Internet

Tags: dsl, linksys, verizon, wireless, router

Environment:  Verizon DSL modem, Linksys G wireless router,  two laptops, one compaq running Widows XP Pro with a Netgear wireless card, second laptop, SONY VAIO with internal wireless card.

System seemed to be running fine for over six months.  About two months ago they lost wireless connectivity.  The Linksys router and Verizon modem (not sure of make, I’m not at customer’s place now) got out of sync.  Eventually Verizon techie had me reset the username/password on the router config page.  Since then it's worked off and on.

I’m going back in a few days to document a series of steps by which they can get online every time, no matter what.  These are not the most technically astute people around.  One thing I’m thinking of doing is to replace the Linksys wireless router with another one, just to rule that out as a cause of the problems.  In general I’m not a great lover of Linksys.

I was thinking of going with a Netgear G or Super G wireless router.  Now I’m not sure.  I did some searches on the routers I was thinking of getting and saw some negative comments about the Netgears not working with non-Netgear wireless cards.  Do you have any suggestions on which current makes and models will give me the best chance of avoiding problems?
Thanks,
Al
