Question

Increasing upload speed

Asked by: Chal2004

I have a lingering problem that I cannot solve. My ISP plan is 512/128. I using Windows XP SP2 Professional with a Netcomm NB9W. Under my old system (windows 98 Acatel USB modem) I could not upload greater than 48. I was told by my service provider that change the system change the speed. Even with the latest modem, I still only get 48. Very occaisonally I have noticed 96, but mainly 48. I have run Dan Elwell's Broadband Speed test for two weeks now, all saying the same thing - 48 upload speed. My ISP is not offering any help and now say it must be the phone line. Are there settings I can change in windows to increase upload speed/ Running VOIP at 48 means I'm not getting the best speed when I'm paying for 128 (I'm assuming that my voice quality at the other end will be better with less lag - is this correct?). What actually determines upload speed?. Where are settings actually located as when I loaded the NB9W onto the system it registered 48 in the main screen automatically and not 128. Help!

Hey there,

Upload speeds depend on what is running on your computer and if you have any network loads going outbound on your local network (LAN). Do you have a router hooked up to your internet modem or connection?

Try some of these speed tests depending on where you live.

If you have other applications running in the background it can take some of your bandwidth away. Let me know how those turn out!

atjo5,
Thanks for your response. The Netcomm NB9W is everything combined in one unit - ADSL2 modem, 4 port layer Qos router, 2 FXS ports for VOIP, etc. When you say other applications running in the background, I only have the normal windows applications with virus and spyware protection. Running your tests - from Seattle 419/48 San Fansisco 418/48 New York 413/48. I live in Melbourne Australia. Running other tests you suggested are the same - 48.
Hope this helps - next step?

Chal2004,

I hate to state the obvious, but from Melbourne, I would look for some performance checks based upon far closer sites than North America.

You may be inadvertently measuring the performance of the overeseas links, not the speed of your connection.

He does have a point, alot of those sites are in the US, so if you are trying to access them over seas then your connection rate would far less than 128Kbps. Do you have any servers that you can try locally in your area? Does your ISP have any speed tests or downloads that you can try and determine the speed within your country?

This could be an incorrect configuration on your ADSL, but Its unlikely.

Because your download speed is ok it does not seem like a line issue. I would be hitting up the ISP again and making them investigate. I know its painful dealing with ISPS because their systems are NEVER configured incorrectly.

But in this case, i think its likely to be the ISP as fault.

I'm not familiar with the "Netcomm NB9W," but if it has Quality of Service (QoS) settings, and the slowdown only happened when you switched to this multi-function unit, you may want to pop into whatever interface they provide and make sure the QoS settings aren't limiting your speed to 48K in order to preserve bandwidth for your VOIP.  The Linksys with QoS has a setting in there to allow a maximum useage for different protocols, physical ports, and IP addresses if I remember right.  i.e. 50K max for FTP protocol, 25K max for SMTP protocol, physical port 4 is limited to 48K, etc.  Your "Netcomm NB9W" may have a similar setting.  Let me know if it works out for you.  Best of Luck.

Your VoIP will not be using the same channel as you computer (usually) which it may be using the other upload bandwidth for this. The upload speed is configured by your ISP, usually if the network is saturated you may have a problem with upload speeds. this is why they will usually designated some bandwidth for the VoIP so you won't have issues. Data will retransmit and you will never know it - voice data is lost. If you hear stuttering speach when usng the phone, you will probably have a line noise problem of some type. Ask you ISP if they have a speed test site, most do since they can only guarantee speeds on their own network. Most will have the disclaimer of "Up to such and such a speed" which means you CAN get these speeds IF the cow is in the fourth quadrant of whatever. You will have to look over your agreement. If it states a speed (without the 'Up to'"), they have to figure out why you aren't getting it. Hope this helps!

Thanks to everyone for the great help. I have split the points as some of you came from different perspectives but lead me in the right direction. I have timed upload sites in australia. Still only 48. I have switched Qos off and on - still 48. As both the Arcatel and now the Netcomm NB9W setup was 48, I'm now strongly leading towards my ISP as the fault. I have contacted them and they are saying its not them, but now I have some further ammunition to go back again and ask some uncomfortable questions. Including asking about their own upload tests and to recheck the telephone line.
Thanks again guys!
