none of those (or any of the others I've seen) specifically say they can initiate dial-up when the DSL goes down or close dial-up when it's back up. Do you know for certain that any of those can do that?

Browse All TopicsI'm looking for a program that will monitor a DSL connection and then, if it becomes unavailable, initiate a dial-up connection. Then, when the DSL comes back up, the dial-up will be disconnected. Ideally, it will be customizable so that I can specify how often if checks the connection, include logging of all events, and somehow contact me when it switches ocnnections.
Does anyone know of such a program.

spuerman,
Are you using a windows machine?
If so, it will do the first part (dial when DSL goes down) automatically if your settings are correct. (Under Internet Options, Connections, set "Dial whenever a network connection is not present".)
Then on the dial-up connection properties/options you can set "Idle time before hanging up" to a suitable number.
When the DSL connection comes back up, it will be used.

Cajun, the problem is that windows only dials when the connection is actually needed. In my situation, I need the dialup to connect as soon as the DSL goes down so that the connection is available. our situation is that we may not need the connection for an hour, but when we do, we need it immediately.
spuerman, how about a combination: use the Stay Connected tool mentioned on the speed-master site:
That website says:
"Stay connected is a tool which prevent you from connection drops. Some ISP's drop your connection due to inactivity. Stay connected sends a small TCP/IP packet to given URL to keep your connection active."
That way, the dial connection would be created on the first packet after DSL drops.

Many SOHO routers have the capability to keep a PPPoE connection dialed up - so that it doesn't get hung up because of inactivity.
On the other hand, you could get a Cisco router with a POTS modem in it and set up Dial on Demand Routing (DDR) - this is what you're asking for. It would be pretty slow though - do you want POTS dialup (~56Kbps) or ISDN (128Kbps)?
we have cisco 800 routers at every site. i know next to nothing about them though. i'll check with one of our cisco guys about it.
it'll be 56k connections, but the speed isn't really an issue. this is only for credit card processing, so we're looking at less than 100 bytes of transfer for each communication. that's why the dial-up time is such an issue. if the connection is already alive, it takes less than a second to get a response. if we have to dial the number, it can take 25-30 seconds.
