Question

Router Problem 2611/1760

Asked by: annasad

i am facing the problem in both of router ... i had pasted the question but had not answered by any body .....i

when i boot the router ...... its boots twice .....after decompressing the image from the flash it generates that msg to me and again start self decomposing the image .....

Smart Init is enabled
smart init is sizing iomem
  ID            MEMORY_REQ                 TYPE
000092          0X000B9D00 C2600 Dual Ethernet
                0X000F3BB0 public buffer pools
                0X00211000 public particle pools
TOTAL:          0X003BE8B0

If any of the above Memory Requirements are
"UNKNOWN", you may be using an unsupported
configuration or there is a software problem and
system operation may be compromised.
Rounded IOMEM up to: 4Mb.
Using 6 percent iomem. [4Mb/64Mb]

it asks me to allocate the IO memory ...but Even  have the standard RAM for the Router .... so why it generates the message for me ...

how to get rid of that

Have you tried turning Smart Init off, or disabling it, and manually configuring the parameters? Everything works fine except this annnoying message? Do both routers boot 2x? Have they always done that?

well ......

Have you tried turning Smart Init off

first of all i dont know exactly what is that service of the router "Smart Init "  and i dont know whether is it on by default or off .... and  what command should be issued in order to use this service ....kindly write them for me ....

Do both routers boot 2x?

well i could not pick up the term.... but if you  mean to say Configuration Register value then that is set to 0x2102 .... and i can view that from

#sh ver  ...

Have they always done that?

well yes they always behave like this .....

i hope that will help you out to sort the problem ...

Exactly what is this router?  (post a "show ver")

Some platforms have a boot image, which may be compressed, which loads and then invokes the real IOS image, which may also be compressed.  Typically this is on higher-end platforms but could be the case with yours.

As for IOMEM and smart init, the amount of IO memory is dependent on what interfaces are present on the router (again, some routers are fixed configuration and this shouldn't be required, but any modular router can change dynamically).  It is simply doing a "best guess" for you for the current configuration and IOS image.

Offhand, it doesn't look like a problem, it's doing what it's supposed to do, other than the possible "dual boot" if there's no separate boot image.

by: jeffkellPosted on 2006-08-02 at 20:59:25ID: 17238990

Here are some key points...

ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 11.3(2)XA4, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)     [boot image]

IOS (tm) C2600 Software (C2600-I-M), Version 12.2(5d), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)   [running image]

Check the headers of each step of your "booting twice" and see if the versions match.
If you have two versions in flash, and have multiple 'boot system' directives, it may be failing over to the 2nd image because of an error encountered in the first.

by: annasadPosted on 2006-08-07 at 06:03:45ID: 17263325

well i dont think so its does like that .... have checked the headers.... and one thing more that i erased my flash and then i took the both image one by one ...... i mean to say that by proving one IOS image and then other both works fine ... so that shows this the IOS i have is supported by the router otherwise it can generate the Error of INVLALID IOS IMAGE...... so i see some other problem .... well what else you can gues about the problem ......

Regards
asad

by: jeffkellPosted on 2006-08-07 at 06:51:51ID: 17263658

Do they match or not?  If not, it's just a bootstrap first and real image second, and that's normal.
Also, can you post a "dir all-filesystems" ?

by: annasadPosted on 2006-08-07 at 07:36:55ID: 17264019

well look ..... now i have just one IOS in my router and thats is

/c2600-i-mz.122-5d.bin

and when i booted up my router i got the message

%SYS-6-READ_BOOTFILE_SKIP: boot system flash:/c2600-i-mz.122-5d.bin command is skipped

and again it goes to self decompressing the image ......

what can be the problem ....NOW I HAVE ONLY ONE IOS

here is a output ....little garbage but if you see keenly ...you can check it out

Hi Anna,

This is the output from Cisco:

1. %SYS-6-READ_BOOTFILE_SKIP: boot system [chars] command is skipped
A configured boot system command is skipped. Either the system experienced a crash while loading this image in the most recent attempt, or the filename is not properly specified. Subsequent boot system commands will be tried. This specified image could have failed for a variety of reasons; for example, the image might contain a bad checksum.

Recommended Action: Replace the failed boot system image with a valid one.

Have you tried to TFTP a new IOS image onto the router and change the boot system flash command to force it to load from the new image??

Cheers
