Belkin Wireless Router - Cannot Access Internet Through Laptop
Hi guys i was hoping someone could help me with my problem. Last week i bought a new laptop with wireless networking and bought a "Belkin High-Speed Mode Wireless G Router". At first they gave me the ADSL version which was no good since im on NTL Broadband 10MB. I then exchanged it for the Broadband model which was what i needed and got round to setting it up last night. Ive got to add that my neighbour has a wireless router also and i could piggyback his internet connection without a problem, till i got my router exchanged. So..........installed the router anyways and everything was working great, could access my PC from the Laptop and vice versa and could use my internet connection from my laptop also.
Now the problem.........after setting up the wireless network like i said, everything was great, for the first 8 hours or so. Then all of a sudden i could no longer access the internet through the laptop, although i was still connected to the PC and the network status was "Excellent". I tried to access the PC through the laptop to make sure, and sure enough everything was fine, but still no internet access from the laptop although it worked great the first 8 hours or so. Im completely lost as this is my first experience using a router.
I dont know what changed, one minute i was surfing on the laptop next minute no connection. When i open internet explorer to access a website the website wont load and it says something along the lines of "Cannot find server or DNS error" Please help as i bought the laptop for alot of money for the sole purpose of being able to use the wireless internet as well as being able to access my PC from other areas of the house. Id appreciate as much feedback as possible.
Thanks in advance.

If i dont get this sorted by tonight im going to format the PC and Laptop as a last resort cos thats been almost 2 days i havent been able to access the internet from my laptop. Before i could connect to my neighbours internet connection and now i cant even do that. Not sure what is going on here.

Ok i had already tried all that stuff up until your winsockxpfix suggestion. NONE of the online apps are working examples ive tried are yahoo messenger, internet explorer (obviously), skype, MSN Messenger and my email through outlook express.
Unfortunately i got so frustrated ive just ran the recovery disk to put the laptop back to default factory settings because like i said before....the first 6 days was great, online with no problems. So unfortunately i cant try your winsockfix suggestion right now. 10 mins left till its restored to factory settings and i hope there are some results but either way......wether it works or not i will post back ASAP. If it doesnt help ill be looking for more advice, and if it does ill come back to let you know. Only thing im worried about is that it might work for a few days like before then quit again. But if that happens i hope you are available again.
Also if this turns out for the best can you still receive the points for at least trying to help me? I hope so. Please reply anyways for now and ill let you know how i get on in 5-10 mins.
thanks

The points thing is up to you, I think it's good information to be in the PAQ for other people to search through, however if it didn't solve your problem I don't really deserve them. You may just want to leave this question open for a few days in case it comes back (BUT DON'T ABANDON IT, US CV'S GET ANNOYED WITH THAT! lol). But yeah, feel free to leave it open until you're convinced the problem isn't coming back.

yeah i sure will leave it open just incase. Yeah anyways the internet is now going on the laptop everything great so far. But like you said im not gonna abandon it incase it stops working again. BTW while im here....could you advise me step by step how to set my Laptop/PC up so that they are not only sharing an internet connection wirelessly but also so i can transfer files from one setup to another? It would be good to be able to transfer songs and other files to my laptop wirelessly and if possible keep track of my downloads on the PC from other areas of the house (or even when i am at my friends house a few doors away). Either way thanks for your help so far. I really do appreciate it.
Easiest way is just right click on the folder you want to share, hit sharing and security, enable file sharing. Then, from the other computer, hit start, run, then type \\{theothercomputersipaddr ess} and hit ok. It will pop up a box with the other machine's share that you just created. Now right click on that share, map network drive, and whammo, you have a drive mapped to the other machine.

its asking me for a password to connect when i do that?

also ive got 3 hard drives and when im doing it the way you advised, all my files are being moved to a shared folder on c drive which is a problem. I basically want to be able to conect to my PC through the laptop, not just share files but actually be able to access my pc from other points in the house. The other way doesnt suit me but i DO appreciate your advice on the matter. So any more suggestions to suit my needs?
I appreciate your advice so far dude and itll be tomorrow morning by the time i check for a reply cos its almost 3:30am here so i gotta get to bed.
Again thanks, and please reply back with a suggestion.
Gdnight for now

1) Have you tried simply powercycling your router?
2) Have you done a ping test to see if you are able to ping by both IP and Hostnames?
3) Has anything at all changed on the laptop, ie: firewall or network settings?
