Question

Switch to a new Linksys router (WRT54G) from Netgear (WGR614) with SBC and no connection

Asked by: benjiwu

I have been using Netgear(WGR614) for my SBC DSL connection for a while and got a new Linksys (WRT54G) and wanted to switch. No matter what I do, using PPPoE with ID and password or setup DHCP in router will not give me connection. My PCs are able to talk to Linksys router (192.168.1.1) but seem like there is no link between Linksys router and DSL modem (Speedstream 5100). Once I switch back to Netgear, it works big time.

I do have another router (Zyxel) and act exactly like Linksys. Please help.

You need to call SBC. Most ISPs will lock your gateways mac address or other identifyer to only allow connection from that device, if you call them they can enable the new device.
What you could also try: I believe the linksys router has a tab for MAC aliasing which allows you to basically spoof your Mac address. Find out what the mac address is on the Netgear router and enter it in the Linksys mac address aliasing tab.

by: benjiwuPosted on 2006-10-05 at 22:31:37ID: 17674254

Can I find out this MAC address without calling SBC. I found that SBC support is not very knowledgeable sometime.

by: benjiwuPosted on 2006-10-05 at 23:56:06ID: 17674500

Just talked to two SBC/ATT tech support and they have no idea about the MAC address.
However, one guy (seems to be more knowledgable) told me that to connect Linksys or DLink router, their modem need to set to BRIDGE mode. No need for Netgear router.
This is getting really complicated.

by: instillmotionPosted on 2006-10-06 at 08:33:17ID: 17677249

To findout the mac address of the netgear: connect to the netgear and ping it's ip address.
So for example if the netgear is assigned 192.168.1.1, open a command prompt and type:
ping 192.168.1.1

after you do that type:

arp -a

you shoud get somthing like that:

192.168.1.1    AA-BB-CC-DD-EE-FF

The mac address is the  AA-BB-CC-DD-EE-FF

I will try that tonight.
How about the bridge mode for the DSL modem that SBC support was talking about ?
Do I need to do anything ?

Could you post the exact model for your modem?

by: instillmotionPosted on 2006-10-06 at 09:58:27ID: 17678246

Sorry I can see you already posted the model in the initial question.
Take a look at the documentation at this link:

I got the MAC address for Netgear router switch and connect the Linksys. And clone the MAC at Linksys but still not working. Then tried set DSL modem to bridge mode as SBC tech support suggest and still not working.

I dont think SBC DSL's customers always use Netgear as it looks to me using Netgear is easier. Even SBC tech support mentioned Netgear is more compatable.

by: publicPosted on 2006-10-07 at 21:56:27ID: 17685109

You should be able to copy the Netgear settings and port into Linksys.
The modem probably handles pppoe, so the router wan is usually dhcp.
The 5100 has a configuration page at 192.168.0.1 and hands out one dhcp in the default mode.

by: benjiwuPosted on 2006-10-07 at 23:22:19ID: 17685295

I have been trying to switch to Linksys router from Netgear for a week and no luck.
I am pretty sure the setting on both Netgear and linksys are the same but Netgear always works but Linksys dont.

by: publicPosted on 2006-10-08 at 11:43:45ID: 17686866

Demonstrably settings are not the same. Maybe you have uPnP enabled on the Netgear but not on the Linksys.
What are the 5100 settings?

Mode PPP on the modem (Public IP for LAN device)

Try setting The Linksys wan to dhcp mode, then check if it received the ip and dns from the modem.

by: publicPosted on 2006-10-09 at 02:47:55ID: 17689532

If that does not work you can configure the modem to handle pppoe and nat, and then set static ip for the linksys wan on the same subnet as the modem lan.

by: benjiwuPosted on 2006-10-09 at 09:17:20ID: 17691591

I tried all setting on Linksys and none of them works.
I will try your second suggestion tonight.

Why Netgear dont need all this ? I plug in and it works right away.

by: benjiwuPosted on 2006-10-09 at 15:11:40ID: 17694168

How do I check if Linksys recieve ip and dns from the modem ?
When I tried to open IE and I can see the bottom display strange IP address (nothing like 192.168.x.x but 230.188....)

Does it tell anything ?

by: instillmotionPosted on 2006-10-09 at 15:16:53ID: 17694210

that's good. means you're getting a public ip which is probably your ISP's dns server.

On the Linksys go to the status tab, what are the results?

The Linksys obtained a valid public IP. That is good.
But the DNS is still potentially wrong. You could try a generic 4.2.2.1 for example.
What is the Linksys LAN ip? Maybe it conflicts with the modem.

by: instillmotionPosted on 2006-10-10 at 07:45:53ID: 17699221

Can you ping the gateway 69.107.77.204?

by: benjiwuPosted on 2006-10-10 at 23:28:41ID: 17704738

Ping did not work.

I have the following detail summary and hope it will help.

SBC Speedsteam 5100 has three modes:
1. PPP is on the modem.
This is the normal mode for this modem when connected to a single computer. In this mode, the PPP session is initiated from the modem. Gateways and routers should work in this mode but their configuration may have to be changed to do so (e.g., you may need to have the gateway/router IP address changed to 192.168.1.1).

2. PPP is on the computer.
This mode is normally used if you need to run a PPPoE client on your PC. This mode can be used with a gateway or router which initiates a PPPoE session. To return to the DSL modem user interface you will need to directly connect your PC to the modem without any gateway or router between the modem and the PC.

3. Bridged Mode (PPPoE is not used).
This mode must be used if you are connecting to a non-PPPoE network.
(SBC technician suggest use this mode for Linksys or Dlink but not Netgear)

CASE-1: Setup SBC model as "PPP on modem"

For connecting my Netgear router, my modelmodel is set "PPP on modem" and it has been working perfectly as following connection status:

Netgear Status (Working connection)
Account Name WGR614v5

MAC Address  00:0F:B5:26:7C:B8
IP Address  192.168.1.1
DHCP  ON

This is definitely the setup you want. Try disconnecting PPPoE and then reconnect on the linksys, do you get the same values againg? do it a couple times.
You might have to call SBC again and tell them the results you are getting. Since the modem was doing the PPPoE dialing initially they could have restrictions on their end where they would need to add your linksys id to allow access. (I have experienced that type of situation before with some ISPs) It sure looks like your linksys is authenticating correctly though, since it shows connected and is actually able to retrieve an IP and correct values for DNS but there could be further restrictions.

by: benjiwuPosted on 2006-10-11 at 09:32:12ID: 17708323

what is 'linksys id' to allow access ?

by: instillmotionPosted on 2006-10-11 at 09:38:10ID: 17708375

What i mean by that is some sort of device identifier they use on their end to only allow that specific device for security reasons. It can be a combination of values. (including mac address, model any type of fingerprint basically)

by: benjiwuPosted on 2006-10-11 at 09:48:05ID: 17708482

I have called SBC many times and all they can do is to check the light and turn off router and modem. No idea about router MAC register and ask me to talk to Linksys router suspport.

Anything can be done on my own ?

Just had a chat with SBC support as follows: Does it make sense ?

Kelvin: In that case I would suggest you to contact Links support.
Benjamin Wu: Yes, connect direct to modem from PC works
Kelvin: If you get connected then there is no issue in the modem or in the connection.
Kelvin: Then check whether you are able to get connect to AT&T or not.
Benjamin Wu: I did that to set to Bridge mode
Kelvin : First un brodge your modem and bypass your router.
Benjamin Wu: In fact, I have been using Netgear router for the past year and it works great. I have just trying to switch to Linksys then it did not work.
Kelvin: You may try one.
Kelvin: First your router needs to be set up correctly.
Benjamin Wu: ok, thanks
Kelvin: Benjamin, there is no need to clone your MAC address.
Benjamin Wu: Do I need to clone MAC in linksys ?
Kelvin: Default Username & Password: Username (leave blank) Password (admin)
Kelvin: Default Router IP/URL: http://192.168.1.1
Kelvin: Support Number:(800) 326-7114
Kelvin: Support URL: http://www.linksys.com/support/default.asp
Kelvin: DNS Settings : 68.94.156.1 (Primary), 68.94.157.1 (Secondary)
Kelvin: For Gateway address: It will be assigned automatically
Kelvin: Encapsulation: PPPoE
Kelvin: Service Name: SBC
Kelvin : Service Type: dynamic
Kelvin: Domain Name: sbcglobal.net
Kelvin l: Host Name: Any text less than 15 letters
Benjamin Wu: ok, thanks
Kelvin: Benjamin, since there are so many different types, and brands of routers available today, it is not possible for any Internet Service provider including AT&T to support all of them. Though AT&T does not support the brand you are using, you can still use it to connect to you favorite AT&T DSL. Let me provide you all the information and the settings you will need to configure it. Later I will also be providing you the support number for this router, just incase you need additional help.
Benjamin Wu: DSL on, Internet off
Kelvin: Could you please tell me the DSL and Internet light status?
Benjamin Wu: You can call me Ben
Benjamin Wu: 5 total
Kelvin l: Benjamin, how many lights are there in your 5100 modem in total?
Benjamin Wu: you can see the router is connected
Benjamin Wu: I was told that SBC need to accept my router MAC so to work ?
Benjamin Wu: only left most 3 led on
Kelvin: Could you please provide me the current light status of all the lights of your modem?

It's possible they don't have that type of security implementation.
Have you tried public's suggestion of upgrading your firmware on the linksys?

I will try tonight. THe firmware is from May, 2006 and it is pretty new, isnt it ?

Do you think those setting will help ?

It's very possible that the domain name is required and that this  will solve your problem.

It does not seem to be SBC problem if the Netgear works.
Best bet is to leave modem pppoe, and reconfigure Linksys LAN not to conflict. e.g 10.0.0.x or similar.

How do I reconfigure Linksys LAN ? Which field ?

I tried everything and still not working. I guess I should give up and stick with Netgear.
