The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

VPN Router, (can we do this with just one device?)

Asked by HKComputer in Broadband Internet

I'm looking for a low-cost solution to do the following:

Main location will have about 6 computers and 6 IP Phones
Main location will need to be/have a VPN server
Main location will have a VoIP phone system supporty 4 - 6 lines
Main location is using a wireless internet solution (no DSL or Cable available, T1 too expensive)
Main location should have traffic shaping / QoS for the VoIP system

There will be 2 or 3 satellite locations. Each satellite location will have one computer and one IP phone and should connect to the main location using the VPN.

What's the easiest and lowest-cost way to achieve all of this? I'm not really looking for a managed service, as this business is too small to pay those kind of fees. I was looking at Netscreen firewalls but they are pricy and require support contracts. I could get a used Netscreen 5XP at a good price but there will be no support available for it and I won't be able to upgrade the firware to the latest stuff.  I'm familiar with DD-WRT firmware on Linksys routers but I'm not sure that it's going to be stable enough and do everything we want it too. I don't think it supports VPN.

Should we consider using Remote Desktop into a Windows server or XP Professional computer instead? It would minimize our MS Access Database corruption. The VoIP system shouldn't really require a VPN to work, should it?
