Question

Unable to connect using Wireless Broadband Card EVDO 3G Sprint or Verizon

Asked by: hu8mypho

Hi experts,

I've been tearing my hair and spending countless hours on the phone and going to stores trying to get this resolved.

I have trying to get a (any) 3G Wire Area Wireless service working on my laptop.  So far I have used 4 different Verizon Card, 2 type II PCMCIA cards (Kyocera PC650, Pantech PC6740 (or something ) memory dump, BSOD..., I don't recall exact error, don't want to try it again right now, but I sure can recreate the problem if neccessary), ExpressCard Novatel V740, and whatever the USB one is, these I actually get all the way installing and initiating card, fails at trying to connect to network , error 913.  I have contacted support, went all the way through network, they analyzed my packets and indicated that I was succesful authenticating but there was a request from my system to disconnect.   (this error I get using VZaccess Manager.

I even tried creating the PPP connection using #777 , id = phone#@vw3g.com, pwd = vzw, getting error #20,  a connection to the remote computer could not be established.

Verizon saids that the problem is my system.  I was skeptical at first, but wanted to test my theory, so I tested my card on other people's systems... what do you know works.   the PCMCIA Type II, ExpressCard, and USB all worked on other peoples system (multiple for different interfaces) ,  but not on mines.

Being a skeptical person that I am, I even went to buy a Sprint Pantech PX500 card, I get Error #720 error.

So i'm pretty sure that it's my system, but I don't know what the problem is, or could be.  I'm stump!!!!

Please help.

On a side note, I previously attempted to use my mobile phone as a modem via tether and bluetooth pairing and was getting error #720, so that's why I have to resort to getting a broadband card.

Hi hu8mypho lets see if we can fix this, setting up a network is relative simply if you have all the necessary correct tools and hardware, but if one is wrong  it just wont work
Did xpsp2 come installed on this system? or have you have upgraded installed xpsp2  over a different OS system?
I followed thur on the Thinkpad guide with your system specs and have this guide, you are wellcome to do this yourself as you know your system specs

this is one I came up with that seems to match your system specs

If nothing else works, you should also consider uninstallang all the IBM access and connection software, and then retry.

In a worst case scenario, i would do a full restore using F11, after backing up all data and doing an image.

If it still does not work, you may have a hardware issue.

I hope this helps !

Hi Merete,

Thank you for the links, the 1st one is broken... I went through the links you provided:
I have XP Pro w/SP2 included.  The links you provided did not help with my problem :-(.... I don't have any issues associated with those..

I'm not sure of what, but I believe that it's either hardware compatibility issue or sw.

I've searched forums, and only found one similar instance, for IBM X60 with built in Verizon EVDO card, .. user left very brief comment so I'm not too sure, but have tried the access connection method.

My next attempt is to try to get driver from manufacturer and use access connections.  and see how it goes.  I don't know what else to do, reimaging right now is not a feasible option :-).

You might have a chance to make it work by clean install os as comment above. But I have dealt with similar issues, and end up with results:
- return the card, get replacement (2 replacements, the third card worked!).
- clean install (work on 1system, other was not).
- works on other laptops, not the one I wanted it work ... ????

I have been the forum that you posted above before, not worth at all. Verizon seems to live with such matter and no patch or at least 50% sure when support customers. It sucks, isn't it? Since not many such service out there, and it is still new tech (even a while so far), not many customers.

I have considered trying card replacements, but, the card i have works on others systems, XP Pro, Vista.  Just not mines... grrrrhhh..

I'm contemplating this reimage, but that would cause tremendous work migrating, reinstalling apps, this card is support to make things easier, not harder...

I will attempt the replacement cards first to see if that is feasible..

hu8mypho, i ask again... Did xpsp2 come installed on this system? or have you have upgraded installed xpsp2  over a different OS system? such as windows 2000?
if you installed xpsp2 without formatting this maybe part of your problem.

Did you follow the steps suggested in your URL?

Removed VZ Access Manager completely
removed all the files related to VZ Access Manager from my computer.
 rebooted computer.
Used Access Connections to connect using my Embedded card and it works fine.

Merete,
I apologize, I thought I made it clear that my system is loaded with xpsp2, not upgraded or installed on top of something else.

I have removed VZAccess Manager and rebooted.  I mentioned earlier that I tried to create a Access Connection profile to create a manual dialup connection.    I get error #720 : A connection to the remote computer could not be established.

I have the radio switch turned on.  I do not have venturi installed.

720
No PPP control protocols configured.
Error 720: No PPP Control Protocols Configured

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to connect to a Remote Access Service (RAS) server by using the TCP/IP protocol, you may receive the following error message:
Error 720: No PPP control protocols configured.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if your computer and the RAS server do not have a protocol in common, or if RAS is not configured correctly.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
 1. Find out which protocols the RAS server is running, and make sure that the RAS service is installed and configured properly (or ask the Network Administrator to do this).
2. After you find out which protocols the RAS server is running, make sure that your Windows XP-based computer is running one of the same protocols that the RAS server is running:
 a.  Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
b.  Under Virtual Private Network, right-click the VPN connection, and then click Properties.
c.  In the VPN Connection Properties dialog box, click the Networking tab, and make sure that you have a protocol that the RAS server is running.

3. If you do not have a protocol that the RAS server is running, add the needed protocol
a.  Click Install, click Protocol, and then click Add.
b.  Click the protocol that you need to install, and then click OK.
c.  Click Close in the VPN Connection Properties dialog box.

Ok, folks, after a long week of trouble shooting and tips, I eventually had no choice but to start messing around with my OS to do last cause PD.

I finally figured out that the conflicting software is TightVNC....

However, in the process of doing so... I have managed to screw up my system...

was testing on a different HD and trying to get stuff done in parallel so I had my old HD in the ultra bay to get documents from.  I rebooted (windows......) and forgot to eject my hd and now when I try to boot up with the original drive, after entering pwd, windows logs back out immediately.

This happens instantaneously, unlike worm/virus issues when it work reboot system or log back out after explorer.exe has started.   no explorer.exe failures (that I can see)  I'm going to be searching yet for more answer.  If anyone has known solutions, can you please help me expedite this process...if not, I'll be posting yet another question :-(......

Thanks all.

I'm going to call Verizon and have them document this, it's conflicting with their software and no one knows???????  well, at least SmitchMicro...

I ended up rebuilding from scratch to figure out my solution, thanks for your hints and tips

by: MeretePosted on 2007-05-14 at 18:40:11ID: 19089828

hu8mypho hi,
with these kind of errors it is always a step by step process to find a cause,  sometimes we lose, sorry we couldn't find an actual solution for you,
with your second question you may have changed the MBR on one of the drives when you rebooted with both hdd connected..
rebuilding from scratch was probably the only solution left to put every thing back to square one.
Thanks you again for the feedback and for using experts exchange, as we are all volenteers here our work takes us away for periods of time.
Have a nice day and best wishes
