Websites slow and refuse to load after cable installed

I have just had cable installed for my broadband connection. Since the installation I have had major difficulties accessing websites. The load up time for most is extremely slow and the majority are just unavailable. If I just wait for connection I get the message "internet explorer cannot display the website, most like cause is you are not connected to the internet...etc." I have tried Mozilla and Opera Browsers with the same effect. I cannot even get onto the Google search engine, but I can access ask.com and copernic. I previously had a dial up and a non-cable broadband and had no problems accessing these and other sites same machine with the same software. I have run both adware, spybot and AVG antivirus and rootkit and there are no problems. I have also cleared all cookies, history etc. have Windows XP, Internet explorer 7 on a Rock Quaddra XT. I assume my settings are wrong for my new connection but do not have the expertise to diagnose what the problem is. Can anyone help?
