How can I access the Linksys RV082 remotely for administration?

I am trying to gain administrative access to my router from a remote location. I was able to accomplish this, until yesterday. Yesterday, a BellSouth technician came out and replaced my DSL modem with a new modem, since the other one stopped syncing with the DSL service. They are the same kind of modem.

I am assigned a static IP, which hasn't changed. I am able to ping the IP, and I am able to type the IP into my browser, I get the login prompt for my router, after I log in it just sits there trying to connect, until it times out.

I am unsure what do check or do next.

For the sake of being thorough I have included the rough layout of my home network.

I have following network set-up:

- BellSouth, now AT&T, DSL 6MBPS
- Motorola Netopia 2210-02 DSL Modem
- Linksys RV082 Router

The Linksys RV082 Router has the following connected to it:
- Internet Port: DSL Modem
- Port 01: Linksys SR2024C 24-Port Switch
- Port 02: -
- Port 03: -
- Port 04: -
- Port 05: Linksys PAP2T VoIP device with QoS set to high
- Port 06: VLAN2: Wired to an Ethernet port to a wall plate
- Port 07: VLAN3: Linksys WAP4400N for my public WiFi
- Port 08: -

The Linksys SR2024C Switch has the following connected to it:
- 2 - PC Desktops
- 1 - Apple Airport Extreme
- 1 - Apple Airport Express
- 1 - Apple Time Capsule
- 1 - XBox 360
- 1 - NetGear ReadyNAS Duo
- 1 - Magicolor 2530DL Printer
- 1 - Brother 5250DN Printer

The Airport Extreme has the following connected to it:
- 2 - PC Desktops
- 2 - Apple Laptops
- 1 - Apple Airport Express
- 1 - Apple TV
- 1 - Nintendo Wii

The Linksys WAP4400N has the following connected to it:
- 1 - Apple Laptop

ALL that being said, can anyone provide me some guidance on gaining remote administrative access to my router?

Thank you,

Shawn.

I am not familiar with that router however, is there not a part that allows you to set remote access from within the router. or specify a port to use for remote access.

Yes, there is a setting that allows for this. It is located under: Firewall > General > Remote Management. I have the following checked: Enable and Port: 80 is there by default. So technically, I type in my static IP address and it should take me to the login and then the router System Summary page.

What it does is prompt me for the login, then times out before the System Summary page shows up.

I can access my main Desktop via RDP through the router and then access the router once I'm inside the firewall. It was working until the modem was replaced.

I'm trying to work through what might be wrong.

is the modem a router as well?
Yes, the modem has some built in firewall settings. I went ahead and disabled those settings by putting the modem in bridge mode so my router could handle the network versus the modem. None of the PPPoE, DHCP, or Firewall settings are active in the modem now - it's basically a 'dumb' modem.
I do have a question and wonder if it will make a difference. My MTU is set to automatic. I remember once upon a time, before, the firmware was upgraded that it was set to something else. I am not sure what MTU is or does, but would that make a difference?
Well, first of all, are you sure its the router login window, and not the modem login? This may seem obvious, but unless you are seeing a brand/model or some other identifier, its possible you are connecting to your modem, and not your router. If you are actually being connected to the modem, you probably need to configure it to relay so the RV082 can handle the routing. You can call your provider for help with this.

I'm positive it is the router login. I know this because the host name of the router is 'edge' and when I type in my IP address and get the login window it reads, 'The server xx.xxx.xx.xx at edge requires a username and password.'

The modem is definitely disabled, and only used in bridged mode, where the router is providing the PPPoE authentication and handles the IP, DNS information.
I changed the MTU from auto to 1492 and the remote login worked. I went ahead and restarted the router after I logged into it and made sure it wasn't a fluke and sure enough it worked perfectly.

Again, I don't know what MTU is nor do I understand why it wasn't working on auto, I'm just glad it worked.

Thank you to everyone who responded!

Shawn.
Since you bridged the router are you required to have the username and password in the AT&T router as well as the Linksys Router.
Thanks. Worked perfectly.

Two things:
  • Are you trying with a static IP address or the dynamic IP?  If you don't already have it, config dyndns.org for a dynamic IP
  • Check with your ISP.  Somethimes they have enabled a firewall on their modem or their modem is acting as a DHCP and NAT'ing all traffic
