Question

What modem / hardware / configs can I do to maximize a 2meg Satellite connection?

Asked by: Clickz

I have the iDirect Satellite Modem 3000 and a 2meg down / 1meg up connection. The contention is close to 1 to 3.

I want to know what can I do to maximize my internet speeds?

1.  Is there a wireless modem / router that is specfically designed for satellite?

2. Are there any configs I can do for my computer to increase speeds (packet size, mtu, etc)

etc. etc.

Im used to 5 megs down in the US, and Im out of the country on this satellite connection and it's 2 grand a month for only 2megs down / 1meg up.  I want to want maximize every last ounce of speed.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

There is really no wireless device that will help.

What you want to do is make your MTU as large as possible.  Typically for a PPPoE type connection this would be 1492, for others it would be 1500.

Depending on your OS you do want to verify that you have sliding window sized enabled.

Basically there is not a whole lot you can do.  Satellite has a VERY high latency which is terrible for small data transfers.  What is "small", well I personally would say less that 100K.  Also VPNs will not work over satellite.

Sorry for the lag getting back to you on this... this email got filtered into my spam and I didnt know there was a reply.

I have Windows XP Pro, with dual opteron 265's and 4 gigs of ram.

I have the MTU set to 1500 already, and the modem is the i Direct 3000.

If there is anything that I can do to speed up this connection, I would be very grateful!

The connection can only go as fast as the "speed" you are setup for.  You state you have 2Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream.

This works out to be about 250,000 Bytes per second downstream (to you) and 125,000 Bytes per second upstream (from you).

However, with satellite connections the problem is latency.  That is the time it takes to get the 1st byte from one point to another.  Satellite has a large latency and there is nothing you can do about this.  For small amounts of data transfers, what you typically see sending and receiving e-mail and surfing the web, satellites will seem slow.

If you do a bandwidth test, I would try www.speedtest.net, what type of though put does it show?

by: ClickzPosted on 2007-11-19 at 06:29:26ID: 20312543

yea, that's what Im seeing.  That initial connection is slow.    But then even after it connects it still seems slow.

When I go to speedtest.net (I have spent many a times at that site) I see 1200 down and 400 up.   when they first set it up, I saw 1800 down and 800 up.  I never see those speeds anymore.

They say it's because the contention is 1 to 10.   Something they never talked about when I was paying the setup.

any ideas what I can do on my end to speed it up?  Or is there nothing else I can do?

by: giltjrPosted on 2007-11-19 at 07:09:29ID: 20312845

Based your 2Mbps/1Mbps speed I would say that you are getting fairly good through put for a satellite connection.

My guess is that when you were originally setup that there was less than a 10 to 1 contention ratio and that is why you got the better speeds.

However, that is only good for "large" transfers.   Typically on satellite connections you need a single stream transfer of 100KB or larger to get the advantage of the higher speed.

Right now I would say that there is not a whole lot you can do.
