Error 721 when trying to connect to VPN

Im trying to connect to my home network via VPN, however it does not seem to work.

At home i have a NetGear Router with the DMZ server set up as 192.168.0.2 ( my VPN server ).

However it tries to verify the username and password, then times out with a 721 error.

can anyone help ?

where are you trying to access it from?  Often times this happens not because of faulty setup at home, but the area you are trying to access it from is behind a firewall that does not allow PPTP pass through (aka port blocked from office).

by the way, which NetGear Router?  Does it have pptp passthrough?  Have you tried updating the latest firmware yet?

Hello thanks for the comment infotrader

Yes its a NetGear router, its a DG843G wireless router and it says it supports VPN passthu. Netgear are not too helpful on how to set up the router for VPN, do you know ? What needs to be configured on the router ?
Instead of doing the DMZ, try turning on a "Virtual Server" rule (or commonly called port forwarding rule) that allows port 1723 to go through.  I think with the Netgear you might need to define a service, then configure that service to allow it to go through.

Another thing is, like I said, that whereever you are accessing it from might be blocking port 1723, thus not allowing to communicate with your home server.

Finally, if you are trying to access the home server from HOME, sometimes you just can't....  certain routers/firewall has a problem communicating from its internal subnet to the external IP... you'll have to test it from the outside, or do a VPN test to the internal IP of the server.

Hi infotrader

Thank you the info i will try this.... just to let you know, as i did not add it, i can use VPN using the local address within the network no problems...its only when the external IP is used it does not work.
are you trying to access the External IP from inside the network?  That might be your problem.

Hi

No im using a dial up laptop to try and test it.

I have done what you suggested and im getting a different error it says Error 721 The remote computer is not responding.

I really am stumpted by this !

I also tried out PPTP Ping..

The laptop ( dialing up ) can connect and send GRE packets, however my VPN server listens for them but does not pick them up !

Still not sure... this all works fine when within the network... its only when it using the External IP address !

hello....

Did that before... i did port 500UDP and 1701 UPD :( no luck
hello...
alot of isp's block vpv traffic for home dsl & cable accounts
they claim hogs to much bandwith
try connecting you laptop to the wan port of your router, give it a static ip address and set your router to use static ip same range
try it like that localy if it works you know your isp is blocking or you dial up isp is blocking 1 of the 2

Up-graded the firmware of my Netgear DG834G router from 1.03 to 1.04 and it now works perfect. Looks like netgear resolved the problem !

Thank you for everyones posts. Helped me along the way

Hallo.

I hope this discussion still can be opened. I have the very same problem user gisvpn described in this thread. But for me downgrading to firmware 1.04 did not bring nothing.

All the time I got the Error 721 The remote computer is not responding.

I use Windows XP home edition as a VPN server behind a Netgear DG834G Wireless ADSL Firewall Router. The symptomps are exactly the same as described above. I tried almost every possible combination of port forwarding settings on the router. Netgear says this rouer has VPN passthrough for IPSec, PPTP and L2TP VPNs. I tried to run PPTP ping programs from Windows XP CD, but the pptpclnt.exe did not run on any of my three Windows XP home computers in my LAN. I did not experiment with switching the DHCP off, since I do not undertand how to setup static IP of the VPN connection.

Please help. I did not want to begin a new thread, since this one describes all my problems. Unfortunately the accepted answer does not work for me. I tried every offered comments without success. It is not possible to try to connect the notebook to the wan Port since there is only telephone (ADSL) connector on DG834G, but I tried to connect from two separate ISPs without succes.
