Citrix client printer mapping often fails and requires re-logon
Running Metaframe XPs. clients can sometimes print, sometimes not. often logging out and reconnecting fixes the problem... for a little while atleast.
The are using Nfuse connections directly through the internet. (no vpn)
Any suggestions on why this is happening?
TIA

Yes, as we have around 300 users that connect via Citrix, we ONLY deploy HP Printers to those locations... Curious, but the older printers work best! (5-6 Ps)

hmm... citrix does not advertise as semi dependable client printer mapping. wierd ;)
that page gave me a headach.. i have so many different kinds of printers... I can not imagine using a single driver and losing the advanced features :(
IE: how will it know some of our printers have expanded trays? we require certain programs to use tray 1 where others use tray 2 etc... Generic drivers would not have that kind of detail right?

We have a wide variety of printers spread around the world, but they are used for relatively basic printing (i.e. no tray-specific handling, etc.). Inkjet and laser, color and black/white, they mostly work. The printers with "extra" stuff like faxes, scanners, etc. print just fine, but the extras are not always available.
We rely on the installed printer drivers and the Citrix "Universal" driver, and are basically happy.

I usually just create a duplicate printer on the client’s machine using the base printer driver for HP printers. For example taking an officejet 7100 series or whatever and creating duplicate just with the standard officejet driver. The only HP printers I have ran in to trouble with is the color laserjets. Did you try to clear the jobs in the print queue and restart the print spooler? Also is the client on the most updated version of the client software because that might help.

No the client and server versions are outdated. I need to update to presentation server 4 i guess.
Guess i need to do more research on universal drivers and standard drivers. never had a problem until now...

If things used to work, but now they don't, then something changed and caused the problem. If you can trace back to when things last worked well, and determine what was installed or changed since then, you might be able to identify the cause. If you don't identify the cause and just make more changes (e.g. upgrading client and server software), you might correct the problem, or you might just mask the problem and it could return, or you might have no effect on the problem and make it more difficult to identify.
Did you install any new printer drivers? Any clients with new printers that are supported? Any new applications? Any significant Citrix or other configuration changes?

Ecszone do your clients log in to more than one server? When they print did the server create the printer? What driver is being used by the printer and if more than one server are they all creating the client printer with the same driver. What types of printer or printers are having this problem? When they are no longer able to print if the server did create the printer is there a job that is stuck on any of the printers queue on the server at the time? It could be a number of issues that are causing the problem. Any extra information you can give would be great in helping you to a resolution.
