The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

I am getting "Cannot connect to the citrix metaframe server. protocol driver error" when ICA clients connect - Urgent
Zone: Citrix
Tags: citrix, connect, cannot, metaframe, protocol
Good Morning,

I have my boss breathing down my throat on this one, I really need to find the solution ASAP.

We are using Windows 2000 server SP4, Citrix MetaFrame XPe FR2, and version 8 of the ICA client (9 is the lastest).

Users connect over a 2 mb private lease line via a cisco router.

I have 4 servers in my citrix farm but one has this problem.

I am getting "Cannot connect to the citrix metaframe server. protocol driver error"
when users connect, but on the second or third attempt they are able to connect.

I have changed the IdleWinStationPoolCount from 2 to 4 but it made no difference.

I have search on the net but not been able to find any solutions.

Can you help ?

Ian

We get this error on our thin clients when they are not able to retrieve a DHCP address in a timely fashion. If you use DHCP, then do you have the IP Helper configured on your router at the remote site to point them to the DHCP server? If this is not an option, then you can consider assigning static IP addresses to the clients.

12.16.2005 at 07:28AM PST, ID: 15498158
Thanks for that unfortunately all of our clients are already on the static IP addresses.

I've seen session reliability cause this problem.  Try disabling Session Reliability on the questionable server and see if it makes a difference.

12.16.2005 at 08:41AM PST, ID: 15498783
Ok - where do I turn off the Session Reliability ? Citrix or terminal server ?

12.16.2005 at 12:49PM PST, ID: 15500833
session reliability is on the client.

i had a very very similar error today. I ended up deleting the user's application set, rebooting him, and then refreshing the application set.
this was isolated to one user though.

12.20.2005 at 03:07AM PST, ID: 15517456
This is still open guys - turning off the session reliability has not made any difference.

Please help !!

Ian,

I'm guessing, since you mentioned that you changed the IdleWinStationPoolCount setting that you have already seen this article?

http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX911130&searchID=12722845

Are you connecting directly with the ICA client or are you using the Web Interface?

Also, just out of stupid curiousity, have you verified that the server itself is not having any network issues?  Can you get on the Internet with it?  Connect to it remotely with RDP? etc.

Good Luck.

Jason

Jason,

Yep I seen that link - it didn't make any different.

And I am 99% sure the server isn't have network issues as it connects fine to the internet etc..

Ian,

How about this one?

Good Luck.

Ok, I need to back it up a bit to get a better picture.

Of your 4 servers, only one seems to be giving you a problem?

Is it all users or just specific users that are getting the error?

When you say on the second or third try, your users are finally able to connect to this problem server?  Or are they redirected to another server?

What OS is running on your workstations?

Thanks.

Jason

A few more questions for you.

Is this your only Citrix server or do you have multiple servers in a farm?

Have you applied any Citrix patches or service packs?

Has this problem been since "day 1" or did it just start?

Thanks.

Jason

12.21.2005 at 08:38AM PST, ID: 15527605
Hi,

We have 5 server in the farm but I only have the problem with this one server - I am guessing from day one the way it was configured - but I only just started looking after the Citrix Farm - To my knowledge all the service packs and Citrix patches are installed - is there any way to confirm that ?

Ian

12.21.2005 at 01:08PM PST, ID: 15529859
If you go into the Citrix Management Console, expand the Servers folder, then right-click on each server and select properties.  There is a "hotfixes" section.

First I would make sure that the problem server has the same patches installed as the other servers.

Also, what version/service pack level of Windows do you have on the "good" servers?  You stated that this server is running Windows SP4.  I've had major issues with SP4 and have actually had to remove it and revert back to SP3.

Jason

Hi,

All the servers have SP4 thw two not so good server have two additional hotfix KB830352 + KB87063 - but they only seem deal with WINS security nothing else...

Any other idea's ?

Cheers

Ian,

Have you had any luck with this?

Just out of curiousity, you said that your clients connect over a leased line through a cisco router.  Do you have any clients on the local LAN that this server is on?  Are they able to connect?

Also, how are they connecting?  Meaning are they using the Citrix Program Neighborhood?  If so, how do they have the server config setup?  By IP address or DNS name?  One final thing, when they do connect, are they connecting directly to the server's LAN ip address or to an external public IP that is NAT'ed?

Jason

12.29.2005 at 08:00AM PST, ID: 15571210
Hi,

Yep I am on the local LAN and sometimes I get the same error message.

We all connect via Citrix Program Neighborhood - the connection to the server is by IP - and they also connect directly to the server's LAN IP not NAT- we do have a Cisco Pix firewall -

I still need to find the anwser to this as my boss is on my arse and talikng about removing Citrix completely !!!

cheers

Ian

Have you checked in the Windows event viewer for any errors?

Also, try setting up your PM config to connect with the computer name or FQDN instead of the IP address?

I know that I'm jumping around a bit, but I've found a few other things you can try too.

On one of your citrix servers, open a command prompt and type "qfarm /load" (without the quotes).  What is the load reported by your bad server?

Jason

Try all that mate made no difference...

Anybody ?

Ian,

On a good server, open a command prompt and type "qfarm /load" (without the quotes).  Does your bad server show up?  What's the load it is reporting?

Also try this on the bad server.

Let me know what you get.

Good Luck.
