upgrade from 5.5 to SBS 2000
Hi,
we currenty have exchange 5.5 running on NT4, we use arcserve 6 to back up the database. we are having SBS 2000 installed, which will give us Exchange 2000. what i want to know is how can i transfer all the mailboxes from 5.5 to 2000. the current server is a PDC and the new server will then become the PDC.
As far as i have been told we can load all other data from the tapes but not exhange mailboxes.
please give step by step instructions
Any ideas.
Thanks

Hi slang9
Thanks for your reply but i have already got the paper. Can you tell me how i would go about carrying it out. Would i have to demote the current pdc to bdc and then the new server to a pdc and import the mailboxes that way or another way.
Dont forget i am talking about 2 servers, not an upgrade from 5.5 to 2000 on the same server. I want to move mailboxes from 5.5 which are on the current pdc to another server running SBS 2000, which will become the pdc.
Thanks

listening :)
I have no experience with SBS 2000.
It sounds like the first thing that needs to happen is for you to create your Windows 2000 domain. The first DC in Windows 2000 becomes the PDC emulator, and the roles it assumes can all be transferred to other Windows 2000 DC's after you bring them on line. You can choose any Windows 2000 server in your domain to host Exchange 2000, but it needs to integrate with Active Directory.

Thanks slang9, but its not the answer i am looking for, i have spoken to MS and they said there is a way to move the mailboxes from a server running 5.5 to another running SBS 2000 on the same domain. But they said unless i place a support call they will not tell me and the information is not avilable as a white paper.
Do you know of any backup software that might do what i am considering, i.e. would Arcserve's exchange agent for 5.5 backup the individual mailboxes and then they can be restored into exchange 2000.
Any ideas
Thanks

Hi,
Once the new server is up, the mmc snap in for exchange may work as in comment from slang9 but your two exchange servers will be the same.. maybe the old exchange server can be reset as a different machine just to do the transfer.
Also have a look at the possibilities for using Microsoft Backup. It can do mailboxes to file on win2k but i don't know about under NT4.
The very long winded way would be to log on as each user and do an export from Outlook. Import back once new server is up.
Regards,
Steve

Hi Runsky,
i already have this information to hand, it doesn not answer my question. How can i transfer my exchange 5.5 mailboxes on NT4 and user accounts from one domain to another running SBS 2000.
Do you have access to any MS tools that may help me?
Thanks

Reading your question with interest, I am faced with the same problem and unable to find a clear answer. Did you find a way to migrate mailboxes from 5.5 to SBS.
