Migrating from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000
I am doing a migration this weekend. (I'm being forced into completing it by June 30, otherwise I'd take more time to read and prepare.)
Current setup:
4x Win2k DCs running Active Directory
1x WinNT4 running Exchange 5.5 SP4
I have only one Exchange server in one Exchange organization (thus only one site), and one AD domain (%company%.com). All users have accounts in AD which are currently used as authentication for their mailboxes. All users are mail-enabled.
I've already created Universal Distribution Groups that mirror Exchange Distribution Lists.
My plan, based on what I've been able to read thus far is:
*Install Exchange 2k into the same Exchange Organization/Site
*Move the mailboxes from the Exchange 5.5 server to the Exchange 2k server
Still need to figure out how to move the Public Folders, but I've only got a couple of those.
This seem reasonable? Or am I missing a pitfall I should be prepared for?

Rehome the folders to the new system....just replicate and then when your in your 5.5 tell the folders that you want to rehome them...
migration is a piece of cake.

Had trouble doing this in my lab.
I installed Exchange 5.5 SP4 on a member server (Win2k).
I was able to install/run ADC without any problem. Replication was working fine.
I ran /forestprep and specified that I wished to join the existing 5.5 site.
I ran /domainprep. Schema elements were in place (e.g. I could see Exchange info from AD Users and Computers).
I installed Exchange 2000 on the DC (only DC in the domain). But when I tried to move mailboxes (from Exchange 5.5 Administrator) I'd get an error (and now I forget what it said) which advised me to restart both machines and try again. I did, to no avail.
I slapped base images back on both boxes to start from scratch. This time I am going to install Exchange 2000 in a separate site and use Migration Wizard to move the mailboxes.

Wron way o move them...you move the mailboxes thriough the AD user and pcs portion under the Exchange settings in E2k
Dont got the long way...when you move int the same org its a piece of cake... you had it up to the move part... You need to laucnch Excnahe Ad user and computers and go to Exchange tasks and then move mailbox...its a wizard....
try it again you'll see....

You're killing me here... :)
After that, can I raise the Exchange organization to Native and be done with the 5.5 box?

1. export them to a pst file from outlook client, then create the new PF and import the items back into it
2. create a public folder instance on the new exchange server
