IMAP4 not starting on Exchange Server 2003

I have done a clean test install of Exchange Server 2003 on Windows 2003 Server. The Exchange Server seems to be running ok. Outlook connects fine, but when I try to start IMAP4 I get the following error:

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Check the windows Event Viewer for details.

However there are no errors visible for Exchange or IMAP4.

I have the HTTP server enabled, IMAP4 and POP3 wont start, but POP3 isn't needed.

Is it even possible to have IMAP working with Exchange Server?

If any one can help push me in the right direction that would be great.

Thanks.

I had the same problem - the service was disabled by default, so even Start didn't work

Yeah, I started the service (without errors) but Outlook will not conenct to it via IMAP, it just reports "Cannot find server".

So the Exchange Server must break the IMAP service. Is it possible to run Exchange and IMAP from the same Exchange Server?
Exchange does NOT break IMAP. Yes, there's a virtual server in the ESM for the IMAP, check your settings on it.
After Exchange 2003 Install IMAP disabled by default and you cannot start from Exchange System Manager.
Go to services, Microsoft exchange IMAP4, change startup type to automatic and start.
have the same problem, MS Exchange IMAP4 service is running, but the virtual server won't start and gives this error.
then you've got a different problem, his services weren't started. Yours are started...

"Yeah, I started the service (without errors) but Outlook will not conenct to it via IMAP, it just reports "Cannot find server"."
I thought that meant that the problem still exists even with IMAP service started.
If its not the case, would anyone know why IMAP4 VS won't start with IMAP4 service running?

corrupted IIS metabase would be my first guess. If you'd like to open a question, please do so, and we'll be glad to do some digging :)

But I'm still having the issues mentioned above too. Not sure why I clicked Answered Question (newbie to EE I think)

The service for IMAP starts without errors fine.

It was a while back, but when I attempted to conenct to the socket via telnet, the connection as accpeted, just not from Outlook.

I will try again tonight, and see if it still lets me in via telnet.

But as before, Excahange is started, sucessfully, and so is IMAP. With no errors.

Oh, well, that changes things :) So the IMAP VS doesn't start?? Even if the service is running? Or just that your clients cannot connect on port 143?
