Unable to access newly created mail boxes (Exchange 2000)

hi everyone,

for some reason I am unable to access mail boxes of newly created mail-enabled users on our exchange 2000 server (the server is running in a Win2k AD domain).

The users themselves cannot access these mail boxes and I have tried adding the mail boxes to my Outlook Microsoft Exchange Server account with no success. (I have administrator rights and am able to view all mail-boxes.)

If I add the newly created mail box to my Outlook Microsoft Exchange Server account by going to:

Outlook -> Tools -> E-mail accounts -> View / Change existing accounts -> Next -> Change (Microsoft Exchange Server properties) -> More Settings -> Advanced -> Add -> then enter the username of the newly created user, the mail-box appears in the folder view of Outlook.

However, if I click on the folder to view its contents, instead of the sub-folders appearing, I receive the following error message on the right hand side pane:

"Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Outlook could not access the specified folder location. The information store could not be opened."

If I click on the plus symbol on the left of the folder I get a dialog box that says:

"Unable to expand the folder. The set of folders could not be opened. The information store could not be opened."

I can add previously configured accounts to exchange and they open OK.

One thing that I have noticed is that if I add the mail-box of a user called JohnS, for instance, then when I open his folder the address displayed in the Outlook Address bar is Mail Box - JohnS

However, when I click on the folder of a newly added user I get the following in the address bar:

outlook:FF00000038A1BB1005E5101AA1BB08002B2A56C200010F138D0507CDD14D843E7C7CEB316BEE

Any assistance would be much appreciated

TIA

Doesn't sound the the RUS is stamping, check the Update Service to verify that it's pointing at the proper DC/GC and the proper exchange server name.

Has this been working previously?

When u get that error go to ur services in administrative tool and make sure all ur exchange services are started.I some times get that error when i restart the servers and for whatever reason exchange services have not started automatically.U must also make sure ur stores are mounted and are set to be mounted automatically when server is restarted(u can configure that in ur mailbox or public folder stores properties page\database section.

hi folks,

looking in the Exchange System Manager shows that mail boxes have not been created for these users although when you go in to the user properties in Active Directory Users and Computers it shows both an e-mail address and a mailbox store location (which does not actually exist)

looks like Active Directory is having a problem communicating with Exchange

Any ideas???

I have found a previous expert's xchange post that relates to this problem at:

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20683080/E-Mail-Address-Not-Created-for-New-User.html

There are 4 suggestions in that solution:

1)

Quote:

ok, this is one of causes of the problem , kindly check it up
go to ADUC
allow advanced view
right click the user go to secuity,
make sure allow Inheritable permissions check box is enabled.

End quote:

- This is checked

2)

Quote:

Check your RUS to make sure it's configured to run, in the ESM it's under Recipients | Recipient Update Services.  Make sure all of the ones you see there (there are usually 2)  are set to Always Run under Update Interval.

End quote:

This is configured as suggested

3)

Quote:

Also check you recipient policy and make sure your domain name is still there as well as the X.4000...and that all your users properties say to update from this policy.

End quote:

This is configured as suggested:

4)

Stickyour Exchange CD in the Exchange server...and go to run...type in the unc path for the setup.exe and use the /domainprep command...this will reinstall Exchange perimissions so and start genrating the Email addresses and boxes....

This looks a bit radical so I haven't tried it...

Does anyone have any comments on this fix or any other suggestions?

TIA

Exchange doesn't actually create the mailbox in the store until the user logs on with a client or an email is sent to the mailbox.  Try sending email to the email addrsses that were stamped on the mailbox.
subsoniq is correct, if it has an SMTP address, then the user has to login the first time before you can access it.

hi people,

thank you for the advice.

I logged on as the user this morning and the mail box was created as you predicted, also, when I am logged on as the user I am able to receive mail sent to their address. I still, however, have a problem when I add the user's e-mail account to Outlook on my logon.

The error message has changed. Now I get:

Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Outlook could not access the specified folder location.

In the address bar I still have:

outlook:FF00000038A1BB1005E5101AA1BB08002B2A56C20001265414564270AD498860F13C35334EB5

(Sending mail to this user's e-mail address from an external ISP works fine and is viewable when logged on as the user so the e-mail address has been created.)

The mail box was created this morning, I have tried adding the mail box in my logon now and still have the problem.

In addition, I rebuilt all the e-mail addresses in the domain this morning (Exchange System Manager -> Recipients -> Recipient Update Services -> Right Click domain RUS and rebuild)

Help!

TIA
