The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for ... Error on an existing Exchange account.
Tags: relay, unable, exchange
I'm an IT consultant for a branch office of a company,  there Email servers are out of my control, but I wanted to see if this was definately an issue that was out of my hands.

One mail account started getting these errors when sending mail to addresses generally outside of the companies domain.  This account has been active for nearly 2 years, and the company has several hundred employees but I've only seen it on one account.  The error is reproducable on several machines using Outlook 2000, Outlook XP, Outlook 2003, and Outlook Express 6.  I haven't tried any non-Microsoft clients, but I don't think that would really help.  The account is connecting through POP3 and mail sent through OWA works fine.

Does this appear to be an issue on the Exchange server or is there something else I need to check?

POP3 is a download protocol.  SMTP is the transmit or sending protocol.  Of all the other clients you mention, this one user MUST be using the Internet ONLY mail configuration for those clients as is Outlook Express.  The user has an issue with the Exchange Server SMTP permissions I believe.

Has it ever worked for this user?

If they can use OWA successfully, that isolates my theory.  Check with an Exchange Admin for this company when support is available internally.

Sorry, meant POP3/SMTP as opposed to MAPI or something else.   Anyway it worked fine for 2 years.

Do you have additional SMTP/POP3 clients? Are others (if you have) are still working fine?

Does this user really logon on the domain? Maybe it uses a local account and therefore has no permissions for relay. Also check the email addresses of this account, esp. the main-address, which is used for sending.

EXCH checks if either the senders or recipient address is inside the authoritive domain. As you have told, that this happens only for mails to external targets, it points me to the direction to assume, that either the authentification of the client or the sender address may be responisble for this behaviour.

make sure that the outgoing mail server authentication option is checked for his pop3 client.  also make sure he puts in the right domain accoutn user name and password.  I have a few users having problem like this when they decided to install and configure their outlook express client themselves.

Does the server have a recipient policy to match the domain name?m Look in ESM, Recipient Policies, Default Policy.

I have been having the same error message whilst configuring by new Windows 2003 server. I am using the basic POP3 service. I found the virtual SMTP service in IIS was restricting relays from All IP Addresses, I change it like this:

1. Go to Start -> Administration Tools -> IIS
2. Locate Default SMTP Virtual Server.
3. Right click and select properties.
4. Click Access tab and select Relay button.
5. Alter setting to enable an IP Address or range.
6. Restart Virtual Server by right click on Virtual Server in menu and selecting stop and start.

Hope this helps someone.

I am also having this same (original) problem, but only intermittently. A user will get this message trying to email to a vendor, and an hour later, a message is sent with no problems. Does anyone have any idea why he might be recognized as a legit sender "sometimes" but not others? He does not log off and on again between attempts. Most of the time, it works. "Sometimes" it doesn't.
