The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Global Address List in Outlook 2003 not reflecting current Active Directory
Tags: address, global, exchange, outlook, 2003
I am using Outlook 2003 to connect to Exchange Server 2003 running in cached Exchange mode.  When I make changes to the Active Directory, the GAL does not reflect those changes.  If I uncheck Cached Exchange mode it does reflect the GAL, however Outlook crawls.  When I change back to Cached Exchange mode it reflects the old or "offline" GAL.  Help!  Thanks in advance.

HAve you tried sync'ing the OAL when you're in cached mode? Obviously the change is not getting to the address book you're using in cached mode.

Thanks for your reply Kidego.  When I go to tools, send/receive, download address book, I get the error Task Microsoft Exchange Server reported error (0x8004010F); The operation failed.  An object could not be found.

Go into the ESM, and rebuild the OAB, see if it completes successfully. Then try to sync again.

When you say sync, I don't see that in Outlook 2003, I assume you mean send/receive and then download address book?   Again what I am seeing as my global address book is the offline version not the online.  Thanks!

Yep - Send/Receive = Sync.  The behavior you are seeing is because cached mode uses the Offline Address book by default.  Exchange only rebuilds the OAB once per day, which is why unless you manually force a rebuild on the server, you don't always have the most up-to-date info in Outlook.  IF you want to, you can force Outlook 2003 cached mode to use the Online address book, but the downside is that any time you need to look up information, you do a directory query.  Reference the following MS KB article for more details.

Once the change has been made in AD, the OAB on the server has to be rebuilt before it becomes available for users running Outlook 2003. By default, OAB is rebuilt twice per day. You can change this schedule to rebuild more often. Once the OAB rebuild is completed, you can download the results to OUTLOOK by using the F9 key.

If you are getting errors when downloading the OAB to your workstation, the files on the workstation may be corrupted.

Do a search for your OST file, the other files in the same directory, OTHER THAN THE OST FILE make up your OAB. Delete these files and perform a manual send/receive (f9 key).  This will download a clean copy of your OAB.

Actually by default, Exchange only rebuilds the Default OAB once per day, but you are correct - you can change it to update more frequently.

I am still getting the error when I send/receive but by deleting the OAB files per Jomat's  suggestion, I was able to get the upodated GAL.  THANKS! You guys are great....

As a follow-up, I'm running into the same MAPI problem. I created a new mail profile for Outlook, added the Exchange Account in Cached mode, which of course created a new ost and download a new GAL, temporarily resolving the problem. This is really a work around because, upon re-sync'ing, the error "(0x8004010F) The operation failed -  An object could not be found" reared it's ugly head.

With a Send/Receive setup of every 5 minutes, the Sync Issues folder errors start to add up quickly. In addition, I don't want to have to go through the above process everytime there is an A/C/D.

Ideas on really resolving the problem?

To resolve this problem try reset the system folders it works for me...

If you make frequent changes to the Offline Address Book, you may want to modify the way that Outlook 2003 computers on your network access the Address Book. You can disable the downloading of the Offline Address Book and force the Outlook 2003 computers to use the online Global Address List when they use Cached Exchange Mode.

To do this, add the following registry value to the Outlook 2003 computers:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Cached Mode
Parameter: DownloadOAB
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0

By using the value 0 (zero), the Offline Address Book is not downloaded automatically, and Outlook must contact the online Global Address List. For additional information about the values for the DownloadOAB registry parameter, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
823580 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823580/) How to configure how the Offline Address Book is downloaded when you use Outlook 2003 in Cached Exchange Mode
As per this article, if Offline Address Book (.oab) files were previously downloaded and were associated with a MAPI profile for Outlook, this setting will not have the correct effect. To use this setting, you must set the registry value, remove any .oab files from the local computer, and then synchronize.

I am getting this err when I do a sync and I checked my PC for the *.ost and the *.OAB it does not detect either file. The err i am getting is:  Microsoft Exchange server reported err (0X8004010F) the operation failed. an object could not be found.

How do I fix the err???

10.12.2005 at 07:38AM PDT, ID: 15069246
We have seen this error also.  What we discovered is that when you  go to the Properties of your mailbox store (the server/store of the users that are having the issue),  on the General Tab, look at the Offline Address List...if this is blank you users don't know where to get a copy of the OAB.  (Assuming it's been built okay on you server and replication properly).  If you select Browse, you can associate your offline address list to that mailbox store.  Hope this helps.
