ok I will be looking closer at those suggestions.

but I do have SP1 for exchange installed.

a summery of where I am at

==================

ok what I have found is this

(and thanks for the post and spotting that)

the all AD servers must have the 1 DNS entry to look at as their primary entry, being the main DNS

the second domain controller that is also running DNS cannot have itself as primary or secondary DNS as it will then think it is the master controller.

the time issue does not help, although both servers were on the correct time ???

I am rebuilt the Exchange Server from the start

and added it as DNS server again

but given only 1 DNS server in the TCPIP settings being the main domain controller

and set it up as a secondary domain controller for clients to use.

during the re installation of exchange, the domain kept complaining that exchange already existed.

I used the asiedit.exe tool found on another thread to edit the registry and remove the Microsoft Exchange links from the Configuration/Sites/ container.

this allowed me to install Exchange again (after doing forest prep and domain prep as usual)

now I am not producing errors on Domains synching, and this is good.

but. i have another issue

if I create a mailbox on an account

and try to setup the outlook profile on another PC, it says it cannot be resolved as the bookmark is invalid.

This is where I am up to if you have any ideas onthis

prefering not to reinstall the AD on both servers and exchange on the mail server if it can be avoided.

we have migrated data over, (but have not started creating shares at least).

It just needed time to replicate out the changes.

thanks for all the pointers guys, really help to reassure that i had things set up properly to start with

(and a reboot certainly did not go astray)

How did you work out this,  I have the same problem and can't seem to fix it.  I have 2 exch2k3 servers and to both of them I cannot get outlook to work.
DNS is working fine, webmail works fine.

message:

The Name could not be resolved.  The bookmark is not valid.

You say you needed to replicate changes, our servers has been up for 2-3 weeks still not able to attach outlook client.

have you checked the logs for any replication issues

run the adrep /replicate tool
rebooted the servers (one at a time)
I figured out the issue, I had to run manually Receipient update service on all exchange2k3 servers.

Thanks,
Reboot the server that is your Global Catalog server. If you did not reboot the server after promoting it to the Global Catalog server then this problem will appear. I had this problem and spent hours researching it. I tried re-installing Exchange, updating my MDAC, etc, etc,. Ran across an obscure article that said that if the Global Catalog server was one that had been recently promoted to that role then you would get this error until it was rebooted. I tried it and instantly all my problems ceased. During this time my OWA worked as advertised and so it was very confusing...
Answer for "the name could not be resolved. The bookmark is not valid" .  The problem is your adderss book is no longer tied to your mailbox store.

I hope this answer will help many of you out there.  Go to the parent org container drill down to Receipients > All Global Address Lists.  Right click on your global address lists and choose properties, then on then on teh General tab choose "modify" then click on the "Storage" tab and choose option 3 "Choose the storage filter for : " "mailboxes in this mailbox store" then choose the browse button, then click the advanced button, then "Find Now" now select your mailbox store and choose OK.  This will re-associate your address book with yoru mailbox store.     This worked for us.  Note- if you have modified your Recepient Policies you may need to go back and resent those
My Modify button is greyed out. I am still getting bookmark error. I have no errors in my event viewer.
